The Meaning of the DC Gun Case Decision
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Mon 30 Jun 2008 12:27 PM EDT
The Supreme Court's decision striking down Washington, D.C.’s restrictive gun ban represented an individual interpretation of the Second Amendment, affirming each American’s right to keep and bear arms (with some restrictions)—as opposed to a collectivist interpretation giving that privilege only to the state. However, in the media buzz (and conservative rejoicing) over the opinion, it should be not overlooked that many questions remain unanswered.

"A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government."

by

Nearly 13 hours after her 16-year-old son was shot in a drive-by, Denise Dixon stood beside the Rev. Jesse Jackson, pleading for gun regulations in the wake of the controversial Supreme Court decision that could threaten Chicago's ban on handguns. Dixon said the community and lawmakers must fight for it. (Snip) Dixon put a face on the aggressive new campaign Jackson announced at Rainbow PUSH headquarters Friday. He vowed to stop gun stores from setting up shop in Chicago's neighborhoods

The Future of Gun Control
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Fri 27 Jun 2008 08:47 PM EDT
"The U.S. Supreme Court's 5-4 decision overturning Washington, D.C.'s handgun ban is the biggest gun rights ruling since the Second Amendment was ratified in 1791. The Court had not waded into this divisive issue since 1939, when it declared, "We cannot say that the Second Amendment guarantees the right to keep and bear" arms. But on Thursday the Court broke its silence to do just that, ruling for the first time that the Constitution confers an individual right to gun ownership beyond providing for "a well regulated Militia," as the amendment states. The Constitution does not permit "the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home," Justice Antonin Scalia, the court's arch-conservative, wrote in the majority opinion."
There's little doubt which side of the issue the author is on - Roland

Obama’s Efforts to Fund the Self-Described ‘Most Aggressive Group in the Gun Control Movement’
by
Riley Jones
on Fri 27 Jun 2008 04:07 PM EDT
Yesterday I wrote that despite Barack Obama’s claims that he believes in the Second Amendment, is a friend to gun owners, never supported a complete ban on handguns (despite a questionnaire from early in his career stating he did), etc., those claims are hard to balance with his approval of Chicago’s effective ban on handguns. In Obama's entire time in the city, there’s no record of him ever objecting to it.
Obama’s audacity on this issue goes even further.
Obama was named a director of the Joyce Foundation in late 1994, and remained in that position until late 2002.

Court rules in favor of Second Amendment gun right
by
Riley Jones
on Thu 26 Jun 2008 10:30 AM EDT
The Supreme Court says Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices' first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history.
The court's 5-4 ruling strikes down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns as incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment. The decision goes further than even the Bush administration wanted, but probably leaves most firearms laws intact.

CNN Legal Analyst Spouts Liberal Claims About Second Amendment
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Tue 24 Jun 2008 06:07 PM EDT
CNN legal analyst Sunny Hostin, when asked about the Supreme Court’s upcoming ruling in the DC handgun ban case on Monday’s "American Morning," repeated the gun control lobby’s argument that "most federal courts and the Supreme Court has found is that really doesn't mean that you can possess a gun. It means that the military can possess a gun, that it's a collective right." She later made the usual liberal claim that the current Supreme Court is "conservative."

by

Barack Obama is warning supporters that the general election fight between him and John McCain may get ugly, but the Illinois senator is vowing not to back down. "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun," Obama said at a fundraiser in Philadelphia Friday, according to pool reports. "We don't have a choice but to win," Obama said, joking that he has heard "folks in Philly like a good brawl. I've seen Eagles games." Obama again said that the GOP will make try to make him look "scary" to voters.

With 2nd Amendment rights expanded and Democrats reluctant to tackle the issue, gun control isn't the GOP weapon it used to be. The rifle group, in essence, is a victim of its own success.

NRA Wins Again in Pennsylvania Court
by
Riley Jones
on Sun 08 Jun 2008 07:41 PM EDT
This week, a Pennsylvania court sided with NRA and issued a permanent restraining order against two of the city of Philadelphia’s municipal gun control measures enacted in April. The measures, banning so-called “assault weapons” and restricting handgun purchases to one per month, violate Pennsylvania’s state preemption laws, passed by the state legislature to maintain uniformity of gun laws.

ATF apologizes to Congressman Bill Sali
by
Riley Jones
on Sun 01 Jun 2008 06:18 PM EDT
Last week, Sali accused ATF of offering misleading accounts of how the federal agency ended its use of the “Always Think Forfeiture” training slogan, which had angered some Second Amendment activists who thought it reflected a bias against law-abiding gun owners.
