America Under Barack Obama An Interview with Nat Hentoff
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Mon 21 Dec 2009 08:25 AM EST
Nat Hentoff has had a life well spent, one chock full of controversy fueled by his passion for the protection of civil liberties and human rights. Hentoff is known as a civil libertarian, free speech activist, anti-death penalty advocate, pro-lifer and not uncommon critic of the ideological left...I try to avoid hyperbole, but I think Obama is possibly the most dangerous and destructive president we have ever had.

There'll be nowhere to run from the new world government
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Mon 21 Dec 2009 07:22 AM EST
The dangerous idea that the democratic accountability of national governments should simply be dispensed with in favour of "global agreements" reached after closed negotiations between world leaders never, so far as I recall, entered into the arena of public discussion. Except in the United States, where it became a very contentious talking point, the US still holding firmly to the 18th-century idea that power should lie with the will of the people...
There is a whiff of totalitarianism about this new theology, in which the risks are described in such cosmic terms that everything else must give way. "Globalism" is another form of the internationalism that has been a core belief of the Left: a commitment to class rather than country seemed an admirable antidote to the "blood and soil" nationalism that gave rise to fascism.

How low will he go? Obama gives Japan's Emperor Akihito a wow bow
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Sat 14 Nov 2009 11:40 PM EST
How low will the new American president go for the world's royalty?
This photo will get Democrat President Obama a lot of approving nods in Japan this weekend, especially among the older generation of Japanese who still pay attention to the royal family living in its downtown castle. Very low bows like this are a sign of great respect and deference for a superior.

The left and terror
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Mon 09 Nov 2009 01:24 PM EST
The Jihadis will return. We know this, in the same way that we know about death and taxes. Thanks in large part to the weakening of our defensive efforts under the new administration, there will be further attacks against this country's population, perhaps even worse than those of 9/11. (This week's attack by Nidal Malik Hasan serves to underline the threat.)
When this attack occurs, we will see an end to all the nonsense. Our present drift regarding terror policy is occurring only because Americans have been encouraged to put unpleasant realities at a distance, to live in a dream world where all the bad stuff happens to other people. 9/11 has ceased to signify. Terrorism has become a matter of bad manners. As my grandfather might have put it, this country is in for a rude awakening.
But there is one thing that will not be addressed: the role of the American left.

Election 2009: Change I Can Believe In!
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Wed 04 Nov 2009 10:42 PM EST
The biggest loser was President Obama, who campaigned tirelessly for Corzine, even giving up golf on several occasions and skipping a quarter-million-dollar "date night" with Michelle to stump for the Democrat.
Just two days before the election, Obama was at a rally in New Jersey assuring voters that Corzine was "one of the best partners I have in the White House. We work together. ... Jon Corzine helped get this done."
Except the problem is that voting for Obama a year ago was a fashion statement, much like it was once a fad to buy Beanie Babies, pet rocks and Cabbage Patch Kids. But instead of ending up with a ridiculous dust-collector at the bottom of your closet, the Obama fad leaves you with higher taxes, a reduced retirement fund, no job and a one-year wait for an MRI.

Truman and the Principles of U.S. Foreign Policy: Jimmy Carter rejected the postwar consensus. President Obama appears to be following a similar path
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Thu 29 Oct 2009 08:22 AM EDT
Upon entering office, Barack Obama knew little about foreign policy. But then neither did Vice President Harry S. Truman when Franklin Delano Roosevelt died suddenly on April 12, 1945.
President Obama often invokes the supposed mess abroad—especially in Iraq and Afghanistan—left to him by George W. Bush. But Mr. Obama's inheritance is mild compared to the myriad crises that nearly overwhelmed the rookie President Truman.

A female appointee with Obama's ear on matters of faith and society thinks Sahria is just swell in terms of "gender justice." All that awkward stuff about a woman's testimony not equaling a man's is apparently a misunderstanding. On a British TV show, Dalia Mogahed, an appointee to the President's Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships made some remarkable statements... more »

The Demise of the Dollar
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Tue 06 Oct 2009 02:22 AM EDT
In a graphic illustration of the new world order, Arab states have launched secret moves with China, Russia and France to stop using the US currency for oil trading
In the most profound financial change in recent Middle East history, Gulf Arabs are planning – along with China, Russia, Japan and France – to end dollar dealings for oil, moving instead to a basket of currencies including the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan, the euro, gold and a new, unified currency planned for nations in the Gulf Co-operation Council, including Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Qatar.

Obama's shameful surrender to Russia on missile defense
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Thu 17 Sep 2009 12:40 PM EDT
This is bad news for all who care about the US commitment to the transatlantic alliance and the defence of Europe as well as the United States. It represents the appalling appeasement of Russian aggression and a willingness to sacrifice American allies on the altar of political expediency. A deal with the Russians to cancel missile defence installations sends a clear message that even Washington can be intimidated by the Russian bear.
What signal does this send to Ukraine, Georgia and a host of other former Soviet satellites who look to America and NATO for protection from their powerful neighbour? The impending cancellation of Third Site is a shameful abandonment of America’s friends in eastern and central Europe, and a slap in the face for those who actually believed a key agreement with Washington was worth the paper it was written on.

A Protectionist President: Like Hoover, Obama is abdicating U.S. trade leadership
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Tue 15 Sep 2009 05:39 AM EDT
The smell of trade war is suddenly in the air. Mr. Obama slapped a 35% tariff on Chinese tires Friday night, and China responded on the weekend by threatening to retaliate against U.S. chickens and auto parts. That followed French President Nicolas Sarkozy's demand on Thursday that Europe impose a carbon tariff on imports from countries that don't follow its cap-and-trade diktats

Wealth redistribution: What the Left's cap and trade schemes, emissions quotas are REALLY all about
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Wed 09 Sep 2009 10:58 AM EDT
Schellnhuber: In a special study we describe a possible way out. The WBGU has also come across countries that pump a lot less CO2 into the atmosphere than the quota would entitle them to. Most of these countries are the poorest in the world, where climate protection and the future are central issues. These nations are saving us from climate change happening at an even faster rate. This should finally be recognized and rewarded. For that reason we came up with a SCHEME whereby industrialized nations can buy emission quotas from countries with lower levels of CO2 output. The money made through this global trade in emissions could then be put towards financing environmentally friendly technology and developments in those countries.
Redistributing the wealth from wealthier nations? Cap and trade? Emission quotas? Hmm, where have I heard someone say something about "spreading the wealth around" before?
Or how about this little gem:
Schellnhuber: Our basic principle is that all humans have equal rights to the atmosphere. This is a basic right.
So now we're back to basic 'global' human rights again? Everyone on the planet should be made whole, equal, and without undue burden. Spread the wealth around, make everyone in the world equal (rights, wealth, healthcare, means of production) and save the planet at the same time? Where have I heard something like that before?
And I like this comment too:
The fact that Germany's emissions quotas will be exhausted in 10 years if they don't change their habits can only mean one thing: The next government must adopt a new and drastic climate package immediately. This will help us develop tomorrow's necessary climate-friendly technology much quicker.
Really? Are we all going to die in the next 10 years if we don't?
Schellnhuber: The WBGU is not political; we merely advise the government and present our studies and findings to the public. Our budget has nothing to do with utopias but rather with the physical conditions under which we can prevent our civilization from crumbling.
Well, I know I'm convinced! Aren't you?
(Our thanks and a big hat tip to Steve)

Anti-American Amigos: Why is the Obama administration trying to help Hugo Chavez?
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Mon 17 Aug 2009 01:09 PM EDT
Hugo Chávez took a break last week from lobbying Washington on behalf of deposed Honduran President Manuel Zelaya to travel to Quito, Ecuador, for a meeting of South American heads of state.
There he launched a virulent assault on the U.S. military, reiterated his commitment to spreading revolution in the region, and threatened the continent with war. Mr. Zelaya was by his side.
The Venezuelan's tirade against the U.S. and its ally Colombia raised the question yet again of what the U.S. could possibly be thinking in pushing Honduras to reinstate Mr. Zelaya. He was removed from office by the Honduran Congress in June because he violated the country's constitution and willfully incited mob violence.
But that's not the only thing that made him unpopular at home. He also had become an important ally of Mr. Chávez and was quite obviously being coached to copy the Chávez power grab in Venezuela by undermining Honduras's institutional checks and balances.

Honduras Nips Dictatorship in the Bud
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Sat 18 Jul 2009 05:05 PM EDT
Democracy is built of fundamental principles that allow for growth and change to occur that is beneficial for the good of all the people: the right to vote for our leaders. Honduras is the latest battlefield where democracy quickly and prayerfully used Rule of Law to defeat a heavy-handed attack by would-be Dictator Mel Manuel “Mel” Zelaya. Former left-wing president, Manuel “Mel” Zelaya, was voted into office by the slimmest of margins (1%) and with a new vote coming up he had to move quickly to maintain power. Hugo Chavez provided him with the plan and the money needed to facilitate democratic collapse and implement a democratic transition to Communism by paying people to vote his way.

The Fleet That Has to Die: The Russian Navy's "Irreversible Collapse"
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Wed 15 Jul 2009 04:05 AM EDT
Last year at the annual 27 July celebrations of Naval Fleet Day, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky, boasted that the Russian Navy would add six aircraft carrier battle groups to its complement of warships. Construction of these ships, he said, would begin in 2012 with three of the carriers to be assigned to the Northern Fleet and the other three to the Pacific Fleet.

Who Will Investigate the U.N.-Vatican Connection?
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Tue 14 Jul 2009 05:49 PM EDT
The U.N. has been rocked by scandals involving U.N. "peacekeepers" who sexually abuse women and children, the failure to protect populations in danger of genocide, and financial corruption. It is an anti-American institution founded by a Soviet spy that is currently headed by a Communist Catholic Priest, U.N. General Assembly President Miguel D'Escoto, who recently gave a speech at a U.N. financial conference on the need to protect "Mother Earth."
So when the leader of 1.2 billion Catholics, Pope Benedict XVI, endorsed a "World Political Authority" in his encyclical Caritas in Veritate, it was big news that could only be understood in the context of the growing power and influence of the U.N. The timing was also significant. The Papal statement was issued just before a meeting of the G-8 nations, including the U.S., Russia and China, and before the Pope's meeting with President Barack Obama.

WSJ: Obama Rewrites the Cold War: The President has a duty to stand up to the lies of our enemies.
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Mon 13 Jul 2009 07:27 PM EDT
It is irresponsible for an American president to go to Moscow and tell a room full of young Russians less than the truth about how the Cold War ended. One wonders whether this was just an attempt to push "reset" -- or maybe to curry favor. Perhaps, most concerning of all, Mr. Obama believes what he said.
Mr. Obama's method for pushing reset around the world is becoming clearer with each foreign trip. He proclaims moral equivalence between the U.S. and our adversaries, he readily accepts a false historical narrative, and he refuses to stand up against anti-American lies.
The approach was evident in his speech in Moscow and in his speech in Cairo last month. In Cairo, he asserted there was some sort of equivalence between American support for the 1953 coup in Iran and the evil that the Iranian mullahs have done in the world since 1979. On an earlier trip to Mexico City, the president listened to an extended anti-American screed by Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and then let the lies stand by responding only with, "I'm grateful that President Ortega did not blame me for the things that occurred when I was 3 months old."

Chavez: U.S. Is a Threat to Venezuela
by
Roland, the Gunslinger

Chavez says a U.S. general shouldn't be raising concerns that Venezuela is buying arms, and the American commander is wrong to argue there isn't a "conventional military threat in the region."
Chavez says the U.S. is a threat to Venezuela, and that's why his government is strengthening its military.

Gibbs Response to Dubya's Criticism of Obama Policies: 'We Won'
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Fri 19 Jun 2009 05:30 PM EDT
Responding to criticism from former President George W. Bush, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said President Obama's victory last year was a repudiation of Bush's policies.
In a speech this week, Bush came off the sidelines for the first time since the beginning of the Obama administration to lob criticisms at Obama for his economic policies and his decision to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Gibbs said Thursday that many of those policies were debated during last year's election.
"We kept score last November, and we won," Gibbs said.
(And the country lost. Congratulations. What a juvenile response. Now, could we PLEASE find some adults to run the country in 2010? - Roland)

Explaining Obama: Our First Islamist President?
by

One might think that Barack Obama's obsession with Jewish settlements in the West Bank would wane a bit, given the events in Iran. But to think this would be wrong. The President has applauded the vigorous election debate in Iran (the one between protestors and those who arrest and shoot them?), and ridiculed the cause of the protestors by arguing that Ahmadinejad and Mousavi are really not too far apart in their views

Obama’s Red Phone Is Ringing and It’s Going Straight to Voicemail?

President Obama is feeling the heat lately for his limp foreign policy postures, showcased now more than ever with the increasing violence and chaos following Iran’s presidential election...Since the announcement of Ahmadenejad’s victory, Obama’s response has been more than unimpressive, it’s been plain impotent. If Iran is the ringing red phone, Obama is putting the call straight to voicemail.
