Eric Barone, who broke the world speed record for mountain biking in Nov 4, 2001, tried to break it again by riding down Cerro Negro volcano in Nicaragua. Seconds into his descent, Barone's bicycle snapped in two, hurtling the cyclist down the volcano. "It looked as if there was a rock or something in the path that made the bicycle break in two," said one of Barone's assistants. His first run was on a standard Mountain Bike and he smashed the previous world record (set by himself a couple of years earlier) by recording a speed of 101mph. His second run, on a specially modified bike ended in this spectacular crash. He broke several ribs and his sternum but was lucky to be alive. He had crossed the speed sensor when the crash happened which recorded his speed at 107mph. Tuesday, August 26

What do sports fans spend the most time grousing about? Above all else, it's lousy teams or high ticket prices. Woe is the fan forced to put up with both at once. Who wants to pay premium prices to sit in the stands and watch the losses mount? Fans in Miami know about that. Over the past year, the city's four major sports teams--the Dolphins, Marlins, Heat and Panthers--have combined to win just 40% of their games while fans have forked over money for tickets and accouterments at the seventh-highest rate among 29 major sports metros. The team, Will Power Fitness, has an 8-0 record thanks in large part to pitcher Jericho Scott, the New Haven Register reports. His pitching is so fast and accurate, the Liga Juvenil De Baseball De New Haven asked the team's coach, Wilfred Vidro, to replace him so he wouldn't frighten other players. “The spirit of the league was community, family, well-being, nurturing," Peter Noble, the league's attorney, told the Register. "It’s an extended family and it’s been disrupted.” More>>>

If it was meant to be funny, it wasn't. A teenage prank in a small New Jersey town turned violent. A man was knocked unconscious and hospitalized after being shot with frozen paintballs. Thomas Kaminski suffered bruises on his body and head. Police said a group of teenagers shot him and his neighbors with paintballs that were frozen and hard as rocks. More>>>

Over the last two weeks, there have been several members of the media (the really ugly ones) have been complaining publicly that the women's event at this years Beijing Olympics are not being taken seriously and that it's been nothing more than a glorified T&A show. To that point, all I can say is the human race simply can't help it and the really ugly people need to get over it. More>>> Sunday, August 24

On Friday night, the U.S. team entered the political fray again by choosing archer Khatuna Lorig, who was born in what is now the country of Georgia, to be the U.S. flag bearer in Sunday's closing ceremony. With Georgia recently fighting a mismatched war against Russian troops in the separatist Georgian province of South Ossetia, many saw Lorig's selection as a show of support by U.S. athletes for the besieged Georgians. A Cuban taekwondo athlete and his coach were banned for life after Angel Matos kicked the referee in the face following his bronze-medal match disqualification. Cuban coach Leudis Gonzalez offered no apology for Matos' actions. Matos was declared the loser for taking too much injury time after hurting his leg during the men's over-80 kg (176 pounds) match against Kazakhstan's Arman Chilmanov. Fighters get one minute, and Matos was disqualified when his time ran out. More>>> Friday, August 22

Jacques Rogge is so bought, so compromised, the president of the IOC doesn’t have the courage to criticize China for telling a decade of lies to land itself these Olympic Games. All the promises made to get these Games — on Tibet, Darfur, pollution, worker safety, freedom of expression, dissident rights — turned out to be phony, perhaps as phony as the Chinese gymnasts’ birthdates Rogge was way too slow to investigate. Fourteen-time Olympic gold medalist and SeaWorld main attraction Michael Phelps returned to his seven-million-gallon water tank Wednesday to resume his normal schedule of performing in six shows a day for marine park crowds every day of the week. Phelps, the 6'4", 200-pound aquatic mammal, and the first ever SeaWorld swimmer to be raised in captivity by foster swimmers (Mark Spitz and Dara Torres), was recaptured by trainer Bob Bowman in a hoop net baited with an entire Dutch apple pie following Phelps' final Olympic event last Sunday. The United States and China traded insults after a bruising Olympic Games baseball clash which ended with the Chinese manager and relief pitcher thrown out of the game. America's 9-1 win was overshadowed by fierce on-field rows which will make for a high-voltage final should the two sides now get through their semi-finals and meet in the gold medal match. China manager James Lefebvre was the first man to be ejected after twice leaving the dugout to protest plays before relief pitcher Chen Kun was also given his marching orders for delivering a fast ball drilled into the helmet of Matt Laporta. Michael Phelps won his record eighth gold medal Sunday at the Beijing Olympics as a member of the victorious U.S. 400-meter medley relay team, breaking a tie with Mark Spitz for most golds in a single games. Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen, Phelps and Jason Lezak won in a world-record of 3 minutes, 29.34 seconds, lowering the old mark of 3:30.68 set four years ago in Athens. The U.S. swept the men's relays in Beijing, with Phelps leading off in the 400 and 800 free relays. Lezak anchored the 400 free to a narrow victory over Australia to preserve Phelps' historic bid. "The Spanish Basketball Federation took out a full-page ad in the country's largest sports newspaper, Marca, wishing the men's and women's teams good luck in the Beijing games. The photo accompanying the ad, however — showing all team members making a slant-eyed gesture — raised eyebrows and sparked international outrage." Heidi Krieger proved herself one of the world's top athletes in the 1980s, winning medal after medal in the shot put for East Germany. Now, the former sports star looks disdainfully at the awards, dismissing them as "doping medals" and honors that turned a woman into a man. Heidi Krieger, the 1986 European women's shot-put champion, became Andreas Krieger after a sex-change operation in 1997. More>>> Monday, August 11
