WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson, Democrat of South Dakota, had an apparent stroke on Wednesday at his office in Washington and has been hospitalized, NBC News reported.
The condition of the 59-year-old Johnson was unknown, the network said.
When the 110th Congress convenes on January 4, there will be 49 Democrats in the Senate, 49 Republicans and two independents. But the two independents will align themselves with the Democrats, giving them majority control of the Senate.
South Dakota's governor, Michael Rounds, who would appoint any successor if there is a vacancy, is a Republican.

I don’t have any questions for the egghead; I have questions for the other twenty percent. Give me five minutes of Q&A with each of them and I’ll jack that eighty percent figure all the way to the top. Then give me the same five minutes with people who aren’t white, I’ll demonstrate they could be called “racists” too.

Democratic campaign operatives pushed newspapers to write about then-Rep. Mark Foley's e-mails to teenage pages in the hope that a scandal would emerge before the midterm elections, according to a House ethics report. The findings were bolstered when an aide to Rep. Rahm Emanuel, Illinois Democrat, said the congressman also knew about the e-mails, which were dubbed "inappropriate" by the ethics panel. Mr. Emanuel, who was chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) when Mr. Foley's sex scandal broke in late September, had denied knowledge of the Florida Republican's e-mails...
