Hugo Chavez and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad plan to keep gas prices high
by
Hedley Lamarr
on Sat 13 Jan 2007 10:39 PM EST
Venezuela and Iran strengthened their growing ties on Saturday with a stream of anti-U.S. statements, various commercial agreements and a pledge to push for a cut in world oil supplies to counter plunging prices.Iran is the world's fourth-biggest oil exporter, while Venezuela, according to U.S. data, has slumped to eighth place from fifth. Still, both countries are significant OPEC voices.Ahmadinejad and Chavez, two ex-soldiers who came to power on populist platforms, have developed a close personal relationship, often hailing each other as "brother." Chavez has backed Ahmadinejad in his battle with the international community over Iran's nuclear program, which last month led to limited U.N. sanctions.
I hope they've thought this cunning plan of theirs all the way through.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss: Senate Democrats stall pork-reform vote
by

on Sat 13 Jan 2007 03:40 PM EST

Senate Democrats backed off promises to reform pork spending yesterday, using procedural tactics similar to ones they attacked Republicans for employing in past Congresses.
Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, stalled a vote on a Republican amendment that would require full disclosure of the spending provisions, also known as earmarks. The maneuver -- which continued through last night and into today -- gives Mr. Reid time to turn Democrats against the measure, which is similar to the ethics rules adopted with much fanfare last week by the new Democrat-led House.

China will have 30 million more men of marriageable age than women in less than 15 years as a gender imbalance resulting from the country's tough one-child policy becomes more pronounced, state media reported Friday.
The tens of millions of men who will not be able to find a wife could also lead to social instability problems, the China Daily said in a front-page report.

Republicans say there’s something "fishy” about the House Democrats’ minimum wage hike, which exempts employers in American Samoa – site of a StarKist Tuna packing plant – from paying the increase.
What does StarKist have to do with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats? StarKist’s parent company, Del Monte Corp., happens to be headquartered in Pelosi’s San Francisco congressional district.

Behind the raging horseshoe falls of Niagara there lurks a dormant monster, a century old tunnel painstakingly laid brick by brick. There is no recorded tally of its human cost but in 1906 it would be the biggest tunnel of its type in the world. Like the secret hideout of a supervillain it defies belief and comprehension, a secret stronghold behind the crashing waterfall.
