(Painting "Shari'a or Else")

A European Union proposal that would allow the laws of non-EU countries to be applicable in divorce cases ran into fierce opposition from Sweden on Thursday.

Liberal Sweden strongly resists the plan, which it says could force EU member states to dissolve marriages on the basis of foreign law, including traditional Islamic law, or Sharia.

The outlawed procedure, generally used to end pregnancies in the second and third trimester, involves partially removing the fetus intact from a woman's uterus, then crushing or cutting its skull to complete the abortion. Opponents of the procedure call it partial-birth abortion.

By validating a ban on such abortions, "the court has taken the first major step back" toward the days when abortion was illegal, said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.

As French voters prepare to go to the polls on April 22nd for the first round of their two-stage presidential election, the campaign has strayed from the specifics of policy to a fierce contest over values and character. Under the Fifth Republic, the occupant of the quasi-monarchical presidency is expected in some way to embody France, and to rise above partisan politics to become a unifying figurehead. In other words, voters are selecting not just a political programme but a personality.

Arizonans are going to continue to have to present proof of citizenship to register to vote -- at least for the time being.

Without dissent, a federal appellate court ruled Friday that a 3-year-old requirement for Arizonans to produce identification to register to vote is not the same as an illegal "poll tax."

Baghdad's Shiite militias have gone to ground, and U.S. military intelligence believes that the radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has fled to Iran.

For the first time since the January 2005 elections, strong and positive news is coming to Iraq. And this is the moment that the leader of the Democrats in the U.S. Senate chooses to throw in the towel?

Anybody see what the evil Brady Campaign and other anti-gun cults have created? I personally have zero tolerance for evil and denial. And America had best wake up real fast that the brain-dead celebration of unarmed helplessness will get you killed every time, and I've about had enough of it.

View Article  Where Is Atheism When Bad Things Happen?

Notice something interesting about the aftermath of the Virginia Tech shootings? Atheists are nowhere to be found. Every time there is a public gathering there is talk of God and divine mercy and spiritual healing. Even secular people like the poet Nikki Giovanni use language that is heavily drenched with religious symbolism and meaning

View Article  The Ghost of Ted Bundy Haunts a Florida Prison...

Theodore Robert "Ted" Bundy (November 24, 1946 – January 23, 1989) was one of the most notorious murderers in U.S. history. A serial killer, rapist, and necrophiliac, Bundy murdered scores of young women across the United States between 1974 and 1978. His total number of victims remains unknown to this day, and there is some speculation that he first began to murder in 1961 at age 15. After more than a decade of vigorous denials, Bundy eventually confessed to over 30 murders. Bundy is considered by some to be the archetypal serial killer, with the term "serial killer" having been coined to describe his crimes.

View Article  Infiniti G35: Sports sedan has been reworked, re-energized

Last month I pondered a column about affordable used cars for people who love to drive. At the top of my list was the first-generation Infiniti G35, which was discontinued late last year.

Memory of that original G35 quickly disappeared when I drove the replacement, Infiniti's reworked, re-energized 2007 G35. Though a faithful derivative of the original G35, the '07 is brassier, sleeker and faster, with more personality than any Japanese luxury car in its class.
