The proportion of TB patients who are foreign-born has increased from 68 percent in 2003. That has paralleled immigration increases in King County since 2002 from regions where TB is widespread:

Worldwide, about a third of the population is infected with TB, including an estimated 100,000 people in King County who carry inactive TB bacteria, according to Public Health and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Each year, nearly 9 million people worldwide become sick — develop active TB — and they can spread the bacteria through coughing. Nearly 2 million die of TB annually.

In San Francisco, Jake the chimpanzee waved a white flag bearing the phrase, "Surrender is not an option." April wore what appeared to be a beret and held aloft a white flag.

The problem was that both animals -- on hire from a Kern County company that provides animals for movies, television programs and commercials -- were not permitted to be in the city, Brown said.

Pat Condell has faced a barrage of criticism after links to his anti-Muslim monologue on YouTube were circulated to commissioners in the city of Berkeley.

He attacks fundamentalist men as ‘primitive pigs whose only achievement in life is to be born with a penis is one hand and a Koran in the second’ and accuses women who wear veils of their own will of being ‘mentally ill’.

In the five-minute video, Condell condemns Islam as a religion of war and its prophet Mohammad as ‘some rambling ancient desert nomad with a psychological disorder’.

View Article  Amnesty fallout: A permanent Democratic majority?

Kaus keeps touting “leftist” objections that might derail the amnesty, “e.g., that the bill, by encouraging another flood of illegals, will drive down the wages of unskilled Americans.” Really? Which “leftists” are touting this except for centrists like himself and Ben Nelson, whom the left regularly deride as Republicans in Democrats’ clothing? Suppressed wages for unskilled workers might have bothered them 50 years ago, but it doesn’t anymore. Not only because multiculturalism has supplanted labor as a core leftist principle, but because they’re about to climb on board a political gravy train here and they damned well know it.

Lest we forget, Osama bin Laden was among the mujahideen whom we, in the Reagan decade, were aiding when they were fighting to expel the Red Army from Afghanistan. We sent them Stinger missiles, Spanish mortars, sniper rifles. And they helped drive the Russians out.

What Ron Paul was addressing was the question of what turned the allies we aided into haters of the United States. Was it the fact that they discovered we have freedom of speech or separation of church and state? Do they hate us because of who we are? Or do they hate us because of what we do?

Purdue University engineer has developed a method that uses an aluminum alloy to extract hydrogen from water for running fuel cells or internal combustion engines, and the technique could be used to replace gasoline.
