Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said Thursday the United States cannot use its military to solve humanitarian problems and that preventing a potential genocide in Iraq isn't a good enough reason to keep U.S. forces there.

Even after fellow
legislators questioned the money’s listed recipient, the earmark remained
attached to a bill--sponsored by a separate Democratic lawmaker--that later
passed overwhelmingly with bipartisan support.
The earmark’s sponsor was
Pennsylvania Representative John Murtha, who didn’t bother confirming whether
the so-called Center for Instrumented Critical Infrastructure, actually exists,
when he sneaked it into a bill sponsored by Indiana’s Peter Visclosky.
Coleman is sponsoring a bill
to ensure that the council gets no part of any U.S. funds sent to the United
Nations, at least for the next two years.
His criticisms are echoed in recent reports by human-rights organizations such
as UN Watch and Freedom House:
Of the 12 country-specific resolutions the council passed in the last year,
nine condemned Israel.
The council pretends this is out of concern for the rights of Palestinians, yet
it is silent when Hamas slaughters innocents in Gaza.
Three of the year's resolutions raised concerns about Sudan, but
there was no condemnation of the genocide there.
The 190 other countries in the world? Based on the council's work, all must be
doing well on the human-rights front.
The council also passed an antidefamation resolution, urging states "to
complement legal systems with intellectual and moral strategies to combat
religious hatred and intolerance."
This was a way to express solidarity with violent protests denouncing the
publication of so-called anti-Muslim cartoons in a Danish newspaper last year.
And last month, when unflattering reports targeted council member Cuba and Belarus, which wanted to join the
club, an embarrassing moment was easily resolved by the firing of human-rights
monitors for those two nations.
The nation's largest
Hispanic advocacy group says it must come up with a strategy to combat what it calls "a
wave of hate", its leaders say came from talk radio's efforts to sink the
Senate's immigration bill.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Friday launched a hotline for Valley residents to report information about undocumented immigrants (-sigh- 'Illegal Aliens').
Details of exactly how the hotline will work and which tips will merit further investigation have not been ironed out. Officials say they aren't sure how many and what types of calls will come in.
Still, Arpaio said deputies would investigate people only if they had "probable cause."
An FBI spokesman said Madison Erickson was kidnapped by her biological mother, and two arrests on state kidnapping charges have been made. Authorities are still looking for a man they said participated in the kidnapping.
