by

Sen. Ben Nelson (D - NE) failed to
disclose that his son is a manager at a company that received millions in
federal tax money, much of it requested by the senator himself.
Since 2000, 21CSI has given
more than $160,000 to political candidates, mostly Democratic incumbents on the
Armed Services and Appropriations subcommittees. During that time, it obtained
$40 million, or roughly 80 percent of company revenues, in federal taxpayer
money through congressional earmarks.

Earmark transparency reform in trouble
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Wed 25 Jul 2007 08:01 PM EDT

Senate reformers fear that
by running an end-around on a conference on the lobbying and ethics bill, Reid
will manage to pass a bill that does not include earmark transparency in the
Senate. The plan is to "ping-pong" the bill -- to scrap the current
bill, which reform Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) will not allow to go to conference
because he cannot get a commitment from the majority to keep the transparency
rules in the conference report, and pass a new bill through both houses. This
move would allow a bill to go through that has big loopholes for earmarks

Romney to Dem Candidates: Liberal views are out of step with the nation
by
Roland, the Gunslinger

"I'm convinced that
America is going to change course and the question is which way it is going to
go: Are we going to take a sharp left turn represented by Hillary Clinton and
Barack Obama and John Edwards, or are we going to march forth with the American
values that have always helped us be the strongest nation on earth. And I believe
we'll do the latter," Romney said.

National Review Online: Saudi in the Classroom
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Wed 25 Jul 2007 06:44 PM EDT

Unless we counteract the
influence of Saudi money on the education of the young, we’re going to find it
very difficult to win the war on terror. I only wish I was referring to
Saudi-funded madrassas in Pakistan.
Unfortunately, I’m talking about K-12 education in the United States.
Believe it or not, the Saudis have figured out how to make an end-run around America’s K-12 curriculum safeguards, thereby
gaining control over much of what children in the United
States learn about the Middle East.
While we’ve had only limited success paring back education for Islamist
fundamentalism abroad, the Saudis have taken a surprising degree of control
over America’s Middle-East studies curriculum at home.

House Democrats, led by
Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, chairman of the House Homeland Security
Committee, sought changes in the immunity language but were ultimately
overwhelmed by the Lieberman-GOP coalition on the conference committee.
"This is a huge win—a
hard-fought victory for House Republicans and, more importantly, for the
American people," said Rep. Peter King, the ranking Republican on the
House Homeland Security Committee. "In a post-9/11 reality, vigilance is
essential to security. Despite the Democratic opposition to this important
homeland security measure, I’m thrilled to announce that common sense has
prevailed and heroic Americans who report suspicious activity will be protected
from frivolous lawsuits."

In defense of dangerous ideas

In every age, taboo questions raise our blood pressure and threaten moral panic. But we cannot be afraid to answer them.
Do most victims of sexual abuse suffer no lifelong damage?
Did Native Americans engage in genocide and despoil the landscape?
Do men have an innate tendency to rape?
Did the crime rate go down in the 1990s because two decades earlier poor women aborted children who would have been prone to violence?
One very excellent series of questions.
