Frequent tours for U.S. forces in Iraq
and Afghanistan
have stressed the all-volunteer force and made it worth considering a return to
a military draft, President Bush's new war adviser said Friday.
"And I can tell you,
this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy
matter between meeting the demands for the nation's security by one means or
another," Lute added in his first interview since he was confirmed by the
Senate in June.
Even though the Democratic
majority vowed to return Congress to a path of fiscal responsibility, the 2008
appropriations bills were stuffed with wasteful pork projects. While
Representatives John Campbell, Jeff Flake, Jeb Hensarling, Scott Garrett, and David
Obey (1 amendment) offered 50 amendments to strip outrageous pork projects from
the appropriations bills, only one amendment, offered by Rep. Jeff Flake,
passed.
The decision by GOP
candidates not to attend the debate mirrors their constituency's feelings. Tony
Perkins, the president of the conservative Washington-based Family Research
Council, suggested Democratic candidates are debating merely to court money
from special interest groups that cater to gay rights. But he suggested there
may be some political backlash.
"If they [Democrats]
want to make a social statement it's a great thing to do," said Perkins.
"If they want to raise money among special interest groups it's a great
thing to do. But if they [Democrats] want to win the White House, polling shows
it's [courting the gay and lesbian vote] not the thing to do."
That is why one old question
is worth asking again. It is this: What if the Second Amendment is for real? Is
it possible that it should it be revered, just like the First Amendment?
Sam Ervin said, "The Constitution should be taken like mountain whiskey --
undiluted and untaxed." Maybe that applies to all of the Constitution.
More than half of Americans
say US
news organizations are politically biased, inaccurate, and don't care about the
people they report on, a poll published Thursday showed.
And poll respondents who use
the Internet as their main source of news -- roughly one quarter of all
Americans -- were even harsher with their criticism, the poll conducted by the PewResearchCenter said.
The Bush administration
announced plans Friday to enlist state and local law enforcement in
cracking down on illegal immigrants, which previously was largely a federal

Oh. So, now, can we expect Judge Munro to reverse
his recent decision against Hazleton,
Pennsylvania?I won’t be holding my breath…
Pop quiz. Which has been
most important in reducing poverty over time: a) taxes, b) economic growth, c)
international trade, or d) government regulation?
We know what our readers
would say. But lest you think American young people are slouching toward
serfdom, you'll be pleased to know that 53% of U.S. high school seniors also
answered "b." The latest version of the National Assessment of
Educational Progress (NAEP) asked this question, among others on economics, and
the results will not please members of the Socialist International, or for that
matter the Senate Finance Committee.
There is mounting evidence
of a campaign by militants to target “collaborators” as British Forces prepare
to leave. Hundreds of interpreters and other locally engaged staff working for
the coalition have been kidnapped, tortured and murdered over the past four
years.
Some big environmental news
that you haven’t heard much about: NASA has revised much-publicized US temperature
data that have been used to claim 1998 as a record-breaking hottest year in the
millennium (h/t: Michelle Malkin)
