Tuesday’s presidential election was a sharp setback not only for the GOP but also for major national pollsters who saw their gloom-and-doom predictions of a double-digit drubbing of John McCain blow up in their faces.
Many pollsters predicted the McCain-Palin ticket would lose by almost twice the actual margin.
As of noon Wednesday, Obama had won 63 million votes — 52 percent of the vote — compared with McCain’s 46 percent and 55.8 million

Michael Crichton dies of cancer
by

on Wed 05 Nov 2008 02:11 PM EST
Chrichton was a brand-name author, known for his stories of disaster and systematic breakdown, such as the rampant microbe of "The Andromeda Strain" or dinosaurs running amok in "Jurassic Park," one of his many books that became major Hollywood movies.
"Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand," his family said in a statement.
In recent years, he was the rare writer to get on well with President Bush, perhaps because of his skepticism about global warming, which Crichton addressed in the 2004 novel, "State of Favor." Crichton's views were strongly condemned by environmentalists, who alleged that the author was hurting efforts to pass legislation to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev pledged on Wednesday to station new missiles near Poland's border in response to U.S. plans for an anti-missile system and proposed extending the presidential term to six years from four.
In an assertive first annual address to the nation, he defended Russia's war with Georgia, appealed to nationalism and attacked Washington's "selfish" foreign policy and "economic blunders" which he said caused the global financial crisis.

WSJ: The Treatment of Bush Has Been a Disgrace
by
Riley Jones
on Wed 05 Nov 2008 10:53 AM EST
From the Article: "This is the price Mr. Bush is paying for trying to work with both Democrats and Republicans. During his 2004 victory speech, the president reached out to voters who supported his opponent, John Kerry, and said, "Today, I want to speak to every person who voted for my opponent. To make this nation stronger and better, I will need your support, and I will work to earn it. I will do all I can do to deserve your trust."
Those bipartisan efforts have been met with crushing resistance from both political parties.
The president's original Supreme Court choice of Harriet Miers alarmed Republicans, while his final nomination of Samuel Alito angered Democrats. His solutions to reform the immigration system alienated traditional conservatives, while his refusal to retreat in Iraq has enraged liberals who have unrealistic expectations about the challenges we face there."
The problem is that The Right didn't abandon Bush, Bush abandoned the Right. He betrayed the Reagan Revolution and turned major parts of the GOP against each other. The worst part was keeping Rumsfeld on the job FAR too long while Iraq languished and the GOP approval ratings, rightfully so, plummeted. So I for one am a conservative who is thrilled to see Bush go...

Early Polls Show California's Prop 8 Gaining
by

on Wed 05 Nov 2008 03:33 AM EST
Approval of Proposition 8 would be a stunning upset in a $70-million campaign that just weeks ago looked to be running in favor of preserving gay marriage rights.
By 9 p.m. in California, 54.5 % of voters favored passing Prop 8, as the measure is known, and 45.5% were against it, with 20.9% of precincts voting, according to the Secretary of State. However, both sides cautioned that the vote could be very close and that it might still be early to declare a winner.
The passage of Prop 8, as it is known, would be a major victory for religious conservatives seeking to ban gay marriage in other states, and a crippling setback for the gay rights movement nationwide.

Democrats pick up Senate seats, but 60 proves elusive
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Wed 05 Nov 2008 03:19 AM EST
Lieberman's future, however, is a question mark. The independent Democrat and the party's 2000 vice-presidential candidate angered Democrats because he supported Republican John McCain for president and criticized Obama.
More Republican incumbents could still fall. But the goal of a 60-vote, filibuster-proof majority looks to be nearly impossible. That's how many votes Democrats would need to sidestep Republican efforts to block their legislative efforts.
To get there, Democrats would have to defeat all the remaining endangered Senate Republicans:
_ Ted Stevens in Alaska, convicted on corruption charges last month
_ Gordon Smith in Oregon, a moderate who linked himself to Obama
_ Norm Coleman in Minnesota, whose race against comedian Al Franken had grown increasingly nasty
_ Saxby Chambliss in Georgia, who was leading his challenger late Tuesday night
In Kentucky, Republicans deflected a strong Democratic effort to unseat Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. He'd been a prime Democratic target.
