by

One of the standards, John Berlau of the Competitive Enterprise Institute says, may “require thousands of individuals working even tangentially in the mortgage and real estate industries — and not suspected of anything — to send their prints to the feds.”
This is a step in the wrong direction — at least for a nation that preserves freedom

The new iPhone has some sweet new features. As an iPod owner, I can say that a 3G network connection, GPS, and a headphone jack that isn't completely ridiculous are great additions to an already impressive gadget, and will go a long way to swaying me toward getting one. But let's be honest — we all had a wish list of stuff we wanted to see in the iPhone the Sequel, and it's doubtful everyone was satisfied.

The audit found the "methods for conducting name checks rely on outdated and ineffective technology, staff and contractors who have limited supervision and training, inadequate quality control measures and inconsistent use of production goals for name check analysts."
As a result, the report said, the name check backlog "causes delays in the (Department of Homeland Security's) efforts to assess potential national security threats residing in the United States and adjudicate applicants' requests for immigration benefits."

Obama Could Debunk Some Rumors By Releasing His Birth Certificate
by

Having done some Obama-rumor debunking that got praise from Daily Kos (a sign of the apocalypse, no doubt), perhaps the Obama campaign could return the favor and help debunk a bunch of others with a simple step: Could they release a copy of his birth certificate?
Reporters have asked for it and been denied, and the state of Hawaii does not make such records public.
The campaign cited the birth certificate in their “Fact Check” on William Ayers, so presumably, someone in the campaign has access to it.

Newt Gingrich is pushing his Drill Here. Drill Now. solution as gas prices go up.
It is a great idea. Along those lines, here is some information that really reflects the differences between the Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. House -- and why winning back the House is important.
In a breakdown of top energy issues, you'll find the GOP is in favor of more options for energy than the Democrats.

What kind of war crimes trials does Obama plan? (updated)
by

Barack Obama's plan for imposing unity on the nation after he takes office apparently entails a close look at war crimes trials for Bush administration officials. He has even said so in an interview with Will Bunch of the Philadelphia Daily News.
This kind of change -- putting your predecessors on trial for their conduct of policy -- may not be what most Americans really want or expect from someone with Obama's gauzy rhetoric of unity. But unity has a dark side in the hands of people who regard their opponents as criminals. America has two centuries-plus of history lacking the totalitarian practice of jailing the predecessors when a new president takes office.

What kind of government forces people to make gasoline out of food, artificially boosts the price of corn to $6 a bushel, guarantees that inflated price as the "base" for higher federal subsidies to corn farmers in the future, and then tries to hide its own depredations by excluding high food prices from its measure of "core" inflation?

Now that Senator Barack Obama has become the Democrats' nominee for President of the United States, to the cheers of the media at home and abroad, he has written a letter to the Secretary of Defense, in a tone as if he is already President, addressing one of his subordinates. The letter ends: "I look forward to your swift response." With wars going on in both Iraq and Afghanistan, a Secretary of Defense

PAC Man Obama and the DNC
by

Anyone who has been following the Democratic Primary knows that Barack Obama claims that he does not accept money from lobbyists and special interests. This is, of course, a fabrication or a stretching of the truth (rather Clintonesque) because he does in fact take their money though not necessarily directly. When Obama became the presumptive nominee he directed Howard Dean to stop taking special interest money in order for the DNC to be aligned with Obama’s so called beliefs.

The Canadian government has ordered a Christian pastor to renounce his faith and never again express moral opposition to homosexuality, according to a new report.
In a decision handed down just days ago in the penalty phase of the quasi-judicial proceedings run by the Alberta Human Rights Tribunal, evangelical pastor Stephen Boisson was banned from expressing his biblical perspective of homosexuality and ordered to pay $5,000 for "damages for pain and suffering" as well as apologize to the activist who complained of being hurt.
