Obama is on the defensive over his selection of James A. Johnson, the former CEO of Fannie Mae, to help lead the vice presidential search process, a role he played for John F. Kerry four years ago. Johnson is drawing fire over his jumbo home loans from Countrywide Financial, a major actor in the subprime mortgage mess, that may have been below market rates. The loans were first reported by the Wall Street Journal. Johnson also has drawn criticism in the past for his role in generous compensation packages to executives of companies on whose boards he served. More>>> Update: Jim Johnson thrown under the bus>>>

Here's a quick geopolitical quiz: What country is three times the size of Texas and has more than 300 days of blazing sun a year? What country has the world's largest oil reserves resting below miles upon miles of sand? And what country is being given nuclear power, not solar, by President George W. Bush, even when the mere assumption of nuclear possession in its region has been known to provoke pre-emptive air strikes, even wars? More>>>

He said it: House Republicans are congratulating a Democrat for saying that the United States needs "more production" of domestic oil. Asked Tuesday about his party's energy agenda, Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.), chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, told CNBC, "I think you have to have a blend of both -- obviously more production -- but also start to invest, which has not happened, in (energy) alternatives as well." Motorcycles and scooters are an appealing alternative to shelling out big bucks filling up the family truckster, which is one reason sales are going through the roof. But riding on two wheels may not be any more environmentally responsible than riding on four. Turns out the average motorcycle is 10 times more polluting per mile than a passenger car, light truck or SUV. It seems counter-intuitive, because motorcycles are about twice as fuel-efficient as cars and emit a lot less C02. So what gives? More>>>

June 9, 2008 -- AMERICA has won, or is about to win, the Iraq war. The latest proof came last month, as the Iraqi army - just a few months ago the target of scorn and abuse from Democratic politicians and journalists - forcefully reoccupied three cities that had served as key insurgency bases (Basra, Sadr City and Mosul). If the Democrats had a plan (I highly doubt that) then they either forgot to implement it or it was implemented and was a horrible failure. Much like any other time Democrats claim to have a plan, they are long on talk and short on action. In fact, are usually lying about what they “plan” to do. There is a lie up front in the price gouging claim. More>>>

Bloggers are raising questions about Illinois Sen. Barack Obama's qualifications to be U.S. president, because of the secrecy over his birth certificate and the requirement presidents be "natural-born" U.S. citizens. Jim Geraghty, reporting on the Campaign Spot, cited the "unlikely" but still circulating rumor that Obama was born not within the United States, but elsewhere, possibly Kenya. Geraghty defined the concerns most clearly, stating: "If Obama were born outside the United States, one could argue that he would not meet the legal definition of natural-born citizen … because U.S. law at the time of his birth required his natural-born parent (his mother) to have resided in the United States for '10 years, at least [f]ive of which had to be after the age of 16.'" While pushing a shopping cart donated by a friendly homeless man on the way to a shelter, he is struck by a car. Tossed onto the hood, Tom crashes through the windshield, where he remains stuck and near death. The driver, Brandi (Mena Suvari), a hard-working nursing home employee, is high on booze and pills after a hellish day at work and a night of clubbing. Seeing her future in jeopardy, Brandi panics, drives home and locks the car in her garage, leaving the barely conscious Tom still lodged in the windshield while she decides what to do. (Based on a true story...but, wait a minute, wasn't the perp black?) More>>>

Huckabee, the five-term governor from Arkansas, praised Obama, D-Ill., as the first African-American to win a major political party’s nomination for president. "I m grateful for Barack Obama and his magnificent climb and the journey he has made,” he said. “As an American, I can obviously salute the extraordinary barriers that have been broken already in this election cycle. But…he [Obama] has gone far enough this year because, ultimately, this election is not going to be about something symbolic, it [will] be about something substantive,'' he added. More>>> |
