Writing for the majority, Chief Justice Ronald M. George declared: "In light of these circumstances, we conclude that retention of the traditional definition of marriage (a man and a woman) does not constitute a state interest sufficiently compelling, under the strict scrutiny equal protection standard, to justify withholding that status from same-sex couples." Curiously, George is saying the government of California lacks any compelling interest in maintaining the integrity of an institution that developed over thousands of years, sanctified by faith and tradition. A new Senate Intelligence Committee report on the nature of the intelligence on Iraqi threats to the US, the nature of the unconventional weapons programs being pursued by Saddam Hussein, and whether this intelligence material justified the Administration’s decision to remove the Iraqi dictator from power..the report -- highly politicized as it is -- concludes “Statements by the President, Vice President, Secretary of State and the National Security Adviser regarding a possible Iraq1 nuclear weapons programs were generally substantiated by intelligence community estimates”, (p.15); “statements in the major speeches analyzed regarding Iraqi ballistic missiles were generally supported by available intelligence”(p. 57); “intelligence reporting highlights more than a decade of contacts between the Iraqi Government and al-Qa’ida based on shared anti-US goals and Bin laden’s interest in unconventional weapons…” (p. 63); “statements…regarding Iraq’s support for terrorist groups…were substantiated by intelligence information”, (p.71); and “statements that Iraq provided safe haven for …al-Zarqawi and other al-Qa’ida-related terrorists…and regarding Iraq’s contacts with al-Qa’ida…were substantiated by intelligence estimates”, (p.71) More>>> FLASH Rep. ''I intend to proudly vote for Obama,'' said a caller to a National Public Radio show, ''because I want to show the world what America is all about — that a person of color can become president of the United States.'' Let's put aside whether the caller would express the same enthusiasm were Obama a tax-cutting, Iraq-war-supporting Republican. And let's put aside what, if anything, America needs to ''prove'' to the rest of the world. More>>>

The Korean War commenced on June 25, 1950. On that day, with the information at hand, Gen. Douglas MacArthur said, "This is probably only a reconnaissance in force. If those asses back in Washington only will not hobble me, I can handle it with one arm tied behind my back." But it was soon obvious that the move was much more an all-out attempt to take over the entire country than a re-con operation. How could all those CIA and military experts have missed their mark so badly? More>>>

Parishioners at Saint Sabina Church in Chicago are demanding that Cardinal Francis George reinstate their controversial pastor, the Reverend Michael Pfleger. The Chicago Sun-Times reports 2,000 people packed the church last night for a prayer service and to show their support. The parish council president demanded a meeting with the cardinal. About 15 members of a young adult group started a hunger strike in the church's sanctuary and plan to "fast and pray" until Pfleger is reinstated. The reverend Jeremiah Wright was also in attendance. "U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said the family members used several nonprofit and for-profit companies to obtain grants designed to help pregnant teens, at-risk youths and others in need of assistance. They allegedly deposited some of the grant money into personal checking accounts and used it for personal expenses," AP reported. More>>>

A court martial on Wednesday acquitted a US Marine for his role in the deaths of 24 civilians in Haditha in Iraq in 2005, the sixth man to be exonerated in the affair, a military official said. Lieutenant Andrew Grayson, 27, was declared "not guilty on all charges" by a jury, said a spokesman for the Camp Pendleton military base in southern California where the hearing started on May 28. From the outset of his campaign, Barack Obama has declared himself to be a Christian. He has appeared to be the far left's answer to the religious right, the man who would embrace the religion of the majority rather than shy away from it, as Democrat secularists have repeatedly done...But Barack Obama, the student of Saul Alinksy, sees the necessity of reeling in those of faith, and making them part of the class struggle, while avoiding the harsher approach of demanding that the people give up their faith as a consequence of their commitment to revolutionary change. Well, isn’t it just like Congress to take the latest fad -- in this case, “global warming” -- and use it to try to usher in yet more government control of your life? The “Lieberman-Warner” bill (named after its Senate sponsors, Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., and John Warner, R-Va.) is based on unproven “science,” represents massive government intrusion, and oh, yes, it could cripple the economy. Senator Obama is now trying to erase his personal history by resigning from his radical Left church, after two decades of active membership -- that's more than 1,000 Sunday sermons over twenty years. Megan Bean admits she was a little naive to think the Iraq war was all about peacekeeping. "We were over there to maintain the peace and we were trying to hand it over to the Iraqis," said the 19-year-old from Titusville, Penn., who joined the U.S. Navy out of high school with husband Chris Bean, 19...The couple fled for uncertain amnesty in Canada last month when they learned Chris would be involuntarily sent on a combat mission to Iraq to take part in what they came to believe was an unjust war. "You don't sign up for (the U.S. Navy) to see a bunch of people kill for no reason," Megan said. More>>>

"A certain segment has basically been feeding a kind of xenophobia. There's a reason why hate crimes against Hispanic people doubled last year. If you have people like Lou Dobbs and Rush Limbaugh ginning things up, it's not surprising that would happen." --Barack Obama, Palm Beach fundraiser, May 22, 2008. The presumptive Democratic nominee for president needs to be more careful in his use of statistics. If he is going to blame Lou Dobbs and Rush Limbaugh for "ginning up" hate crimes against Hispanics, he needs solid data to back up his allegation. More>>>

The information superhighway that is the internet has been an equal opportunity route. A local shop's web page isn't shunted into the slow lane while Mega Corporation's blows by in the express. Each is entitled to use the same path at the same speed. Federal legislation is needed to ensure internet providers, primarily phone and cable companies, don't undermine that equality. There is a danger that internet providers will charge extra for faster transmission of websites or services, leaving those unwilling or unable to pay to lag behind. There also is a danger that providers might block sites or services because of content. More>>> |
