Michael Phelps won his record eighth gold medal Sunday at the Beijing Olympics as a member of the victorious U.S. 400-meter medley relay team, breaking a tie with Mark Spitz for most golds in a single games.
Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen, Phelps and Jason Lezak won in a world-record of 3 minutes, 29.34 seconds, lowering the old mark of 3:30.68 set four years ago in Athens.
The U.S. swept the men's relays in Beijing, with Phelps leading off in the 400 and 800 free relays. Lezak anchored the 400 free to a narrow victory over Australia to preserve Phelps' historic bid.

Predator Pilots Suffering War Stress

The Air National Guardsmen who operate Predator drones over Iraq via remote control, launching deadly missile attacks from the safety of Southern California 7,000 miles away, are suffering some of the same psychological stresses as their comrades on the battlefield.
Working in air-conditioned trailers, Predator pilots observe the field of battle through a bank of video screens and kill enemy fighters with a few computer keystrokes. Then, after their shifts are over, they get to drive home and sleep in their own beds.
But that whiplash transition is taking a toll on some of them mentally, and so is the way the unmanned aircraft's cameras enable them to see people getting killed in high-resolution detail, some officers say.

ChiTrib's James (as well as CNN's King and MediaMatters' Waldman) smear Obama Nation author Corsi

FTA: I haven't fully read Corsi's book yet; I've only skimmed it...But it seems that Corsi's "scholarship" leaves a lot to desired...One of Corsi's claims to credibility is his doctorate in political science from Harvard University. His Ph.D appears after his name on the cover and title page of the book.
But a Ph.D. isn't necessarily proof that your worldview is well-grounded. Anyone who doubts that need only consider Theodore Kaczynski, the Unabomber, a University of Michigan Ph.D in mathematics.
(As a commenter pointed out, a Ph.D in mathematics has little to do with being the Unabomber. A Ph.D in political science has much to do with putting out a credible book about a politician. Smearing Corsi personally rather than pointing out where he may or may not have gotten his facts wrong in his book is intellectually dishonest and contemptible - Roland)

Star Trek warp drive is a possibility, say scientists
by

on Sat 16 Aug 2008 11:56 AM EDT
Two physicists have boldly gone where no reputable scientists should go and devised a new scheme to travel faster than the speed of light.
The advance could mean that Star Trek fantasies of interstellar civilisations and voyages powered by warp drive are now no longer the exclusive domain of science fiction writers.
The US Starship Enterprise from the original Star Trek series
In the long running television series created by Gene Roddenberry, the warp drive was invented by Zefram Cochrane, who began his epic project in 2053 in Bozeman, Montana.

A tiny Texas school district may be the first in the nation to allow teachers and staff to pack guns for protection when classes begin later this month, a newspaper reported.
Trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change last October so employees can carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings, provided the gun-toting teachers follow certain requirements.
