Anderson Cooper: Is the tide turning?
by

on Mon 18 Aug 2008 11:48 PM EDT
McCain is now on a sustained roll in his campaign. Since the time he shook up his organization a few weeks ago, he has been much more focused and has started to get through to voters. Democrats — and the press — didn’t like the quality of those ads, but they seem to have worked politically. His stand on drilling and on Russia have also strengthened his aura of command. And now Saddleback.

The United States and China traded insults after a bruising Olympic Games baseball clash which ended with the Chinese manager and relief pitcher thrown out of the game.
America's 9-1 win was overshadowed by fierce on-field rows which will make for a high-voltage final should the two sides now get through their semi-finals and meet in the gold medal match.
China manager James Lefebvre was the first man to be ejected after twice leaving the dugout to protest plays before relief pitcher Chen Kun was also given his marching orders for delivering a fast ball drilled into the helmet of Matt Laporta.

Feder: Georgia and George Bush on the Left's mind
by
Roland, the Gunslinger
on Mon 18 Aug 2008 07:34 PM EDT
Last week, the left had Georgia on its mind, or what's left of it -- Georgia and its mind.
Its bizarre but wholly predictable reaction to the worst Russian aggression since the end of the Cold War was to blame President George W. Bush for something Moscow has been doing since the days of the Romanovs -- invading and dominating neighboring states.
But in the left's fevered imagination, Bush created the precedent for a move Putin has probably been planning (or at least contemplating) since he became president of Russia in 1999 -- 4 years before Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Premature baby 'comes back to life'
by

on Mon 18 Aug 2008 07:14 PM EDT
A premature baby who was pronounced dead "came back to life" Sunday after five hours in Nahariya Hospital in northern Israel.
The baby girl, who was in a cooler at the hospital, suddenly showed signs of life and was being treated in the premature baby unit.
Doctors estimated that the cooler brought the fetus "back to life."
The mother, 26, from a Western Galilee village, was in the fifth month of her pregnancy when she underwent a series of tests, during which it was discovered that she was suffering from internal bleeding and that the fetus had ceased to show signs of life.
The woman underwent an abortion and the baby, weighing 610 grams, was extracted from her womb without a pulse, hospital officials said.

Calif top court: Docs can't withhold care to gays
by

California's highest court on Monday barred doctors from invoking their religious beliefs as a reason to deny treatment to gays and lesbians, ruling that state law prohibiting sexual orientation discrimination extends to the medical profession.
Justice Joyce Kennard wrote that two Christian fertility doctors who refused to artificially inseminate a lesbian have neither a free speech right nor a religious exemption from the state's law, which "imposes on business establishments certain antidiscrimination obligations."

The NBC family of networks has no problem showing viewers how to save the planet. But if it is a muggy, smoggy 85 degrees, as is the forecast for Beijing this week, consider looking elsewhere for eco-inspiration.
WTHR, the NBC affiliate for Indianapolis, reported from Beijing and described the NBC set used for the network's two highest rated news broadcasts, “NBC Nightly News” and “Today,” as air conditioned – even though it is outdoors.
