The Defense Department will push back its decision on a $35 billion tanker contract to the next administration, delaying again the hotly disputed competition between Boeing and Northrop Grumman to replace the Air Force's aging aerial refueling fleet. Defense Secretary Robert Gates told lawmakers Wednesday that he decided to cancel the current round of bidding on the plane

View Article  National Enquirer: Sarah Palin - WHAT SHE'S HIDING

FTA: The Enquirer’s team of reporters has combed the Alaskan wilderness to discover the hidden truth about Gov. Palin’s family, which has become a central part of political identity.

Lots of "unnamed" "family friends" in this piece. Will Obama say that this, too, is "ENOUGH"? I won't hold my breath. -Roland

View Article  Why Sarah Palin Makes such a Big Difference for the GOP Ticket

Sarah Palin is the base, as in those who believe in the basic principals of smaller government, lower taxes and a strong national defense. She is more of the base than George Bush 41 or 43. She lives a Reagan life. She lives a Contract with America life. She lives the life the Founding Fathers envisioned when they crafted a Constitution to guarantee everyone a shot at such a life.

View Article  Cornyn calls for criminal probe of Fannie, Freddie

Texas Sen. John Cornyn, citing a 2006 finding that Fannie Mae intentionally overstated earnings, called for a criminal probe of the mortgage giant and Freddie Mac in the wake of a government bailout to prevent their collapse. Cornyn requested the investigation in a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey. The two government-sponsored companies were placed in a government conservatorship by the U.S. Treasury this week

It's about f***ing time, I'd say. Now, maybe we'll see who the real players behind the scenes were who got rich from cooking the books! - Roland

View Article  Cannabis linked to earlier psychosis onset

Researchers from Spain have found a strong and independent link between cannabis use and the onset of psychosis at a younger age. The association, they say, cannot be explained by chance, and is not related to gender or the use of other drugs. It is, however, related to the amount of cannabis used.

View Article  Yes, Palin Did Stop That Bridge

Yes, she once supported the project: But after witnessing the problems created by earmarks for her state and for the nation's budget, she did what others like me have done: She changed her position and saved taxpayers millions. Even the Alaska Democratic Party credits her with killing the bridge...In March of this year, the Anchorage Daily News reported that, "Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens is aggravated about what he sees as Gov. Sarah Palin's antagonism toward the earmarks he uses to steer federal money to the state."

When the Senate had its chance to stop the Bridge to Nowhere and transfer the money to Katrina rebuilding, Messrs. Obama and Biden voted for the $223 million earmark, siding with the old boys' club in the Senate. And to date, they still have not publicly renounced their support for the infamous earmark.

View Article  S.C. Dem chair: Palin primary qualification is she hasn't had an abortion
South Carolina Democratic chairwoman Carol Fowler sharply attacked Sarah Palin today, saying John McCain had chosen a running mate " whose primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion.”

Palin is an opponent of abortion rights and gave birth to her fifth child, Trig, earlier this year after finding out during her pregnancy that the baby had Down syndrome.

Fowler told my colleague Alex Burns in an interview that the selection of an opponent of abortion rights would not boost McCain among many women.

“Among Democratic women and even among independent women, I don’t think it helped him,” she said.

Told of McCain's boost in the new ABC/Washington Post among white women following the Palin pick, Fowler said: "Just anecdotally, I believe that those white women are Republican women anyway."

View Article  The Rookie... Press turns on Obama

Obama- "See, it would be funny, but the news media decided that would be the lead story yesterday. This happens every election cycle. Every four years, this is what we do. This is what they want to spend two of the last 55 days talking about...Enough!" he said.

You know Senator, telling them 'Enough' which is basically 'don't ask me again' or 'Shut Up' isn't going to get you anywhere with them. Whether the issue is made up or not, it has been dropped at your 'feet' and you still have to deal with it. A President doesn't get to pick and choose the problems he has to confront. Getting angry isn't going to make it, or any other problems, go away regardless of whether you believe it is legitimate. This type of 'hissy fit' only emboldens your opponents and makes you look defensive. -Riley

View Article  He said 'Lipstick'

I spoke with Roland the other day about how we've been posting so much Palin stuff lately and we really don't want The Saloon to become 'All Sarah, All the Time.' Nothing against Palin (we do love her lots) or the campaign but she is the Big Story and Obama walked right into a 'cultural insensitivity' yesterday... again.

Anyway, whether he intended to compare her to a pig or just misspoke, here's a fine 'rebuttal' from the McCain camp.-Riley

The world's largest particle collider successfully completed its first major test by firing a beam of protons all the way around a 17-mile tunnel Wednesday in what scientists hope is the next great step to understanding the makeup of the universe.

After a series of trial runs, two white dots flashed on a computer screen indicating that the protons had traveled the full length of the $3.8 billion Large Hadron Collider.

"I can't exclude that if such decisions are taken by our military-political leadership, the missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic and other such objects could be chosen as designated targets for some of our inter-continental ballistic missiles," General Nikolai Solovtsov said, quoted by Interfax.
