The closest historical analogy to the Fannie-Freddie crisis is the rescue of the Farm Credit and savings and loan systems in the late 1980s, said Bert Ely, a banking consultant who has been a longtime critic of the mortgage finance companies. The savings and loan bailout followed years of high interest rates and risky lending practices and ultimately cost taxpayers roughly $124 billion, with the banking industry kicking in another $30 billion, Ely said More>>>

For U.S. authorities, it was an encouraging example of cross-border cooperation in the drug war. For Mexico's crime bosses, it was a police victory that could not go unpunished. That night last December, while Soriano slept with his wife and baby daughter, two heavily armed men broke into his house and shot him 45 times. The 35-year-old father of three young daughters died in his bedroom. He had lasted two days as the second-in-command of the department. More>>>

During the 1997 British general election, the late Lord Jenkins said that Tony Blair was like a man walking down a shiny corridor carrying a precious vase. He was the favourite and held his fate in his hands. If he could just reach the end of the hall without a slip, a Labour victory was assured. The same could have been said of the American Democrats last week. But instead of protecting their precious advantage, they succumbed to a spasm of hatred and threw the vase, the crockery, the cutlery and the kitchen sink at an obscure politician from Alaska. “You know, I actually did,” Obama said. “I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school. And I was growing up in Hawaii. And I have friends whose parents were in the military. There are a lot of Army, military bases there.

Even the most common form of camouflage—the coloured patterns printed onto combat fatigues—is being given a high-tech twist, as designers work with new software that incorporates neuroscientists’ understanding of human vision. Pattern-generation software analyses a large number of photographs of a given theatre of operations. More>>>

The suit alleges Dunham (Obama's mother) traveled to Kenya during her pregnancy at age 18 and was prevented from boarding an airline flight back to Hawaii because of the late stage of her pregnancy.
She reportedly gave birth to Obama in Kenya, then flew home to Hawaii and registered his birth there, according to a memo supporting the motion for the temporary restraining order. Under U.S. law at the time of the Illinois lawmaker's birth, if he had been born abroad, and one parent was a U.S. citizen, his mother would have had to live ten years in the U.S., five of which after she reached 14 (years of age), according to court papers. If Dunham was only 18 years old when she gave birth to her son, Berg says, her baby would not have met U.S. citizenship requirements. "We're absolutely positively sure it's true," he said. More>>>

There was a time, briefly, when Bill was funny. But this? This is pathetic as he attempts to copy Jon Stewart. I especially love the part where he he says 'I'm supporting Obama' and that 'Americans are so stupid.' Bill Maher... a Has Been who Never Was and wants to be Again. |
