Muslim cab drivers whose religious beliefs go against driving passengers who carry alcohol have lost another round in court. The Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday against the cab drivers' attempt to block penalties for refusing service. An ordinance adopted by the Metropolitan Airports Commission last year revokes a cab driver's license for 30 days for refusing a fare...A second refusal brings a two-year revocation. More>>>

Amie Parnes reports from Lebanon, VA: Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin's new "change" mantra. "You can put lipstick on a pig," he said as the crowd cheered. "It's still a pig." "You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink." "We've had enough of the same old thing." The crowd apparently took the "lipstick" line as a reference to Palin, who described the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull in a single word: "lipstick." UPDATE: The McCain campaign is now saying Obama called Palin a pig, which he didn't. They also note that "lipstick is a fairly common idiom he often uses," as in a recent Washington Post interview. McCain has also used the phrase. Though on a day when Obama's surrogates were joking that Palin's record can't be concealed with lipstick, it was hard for those following the campaign not to hear the echo. More>>>

Politico - Over the past few years, perhaps no film controversy has inspired more outrage from conservatives than the Walt Disney Companys handling of the ambitious 2006 miniseries The Path to 9/11. In the wake of Michael Moores 2004 anti-Bush documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 and the 2003 CBS biopic The Reagans, the Disney censorship fiasco has been a frequent bone of contention on right-wing blogs, AM talk radio and other media outlets. In addition to making cuts in its ABC-TV telefilm after complaints from political forces, the company also shelved plans for a subsequent DVD release. Now the imbroglio has been revived for a direct-to-video documentary called "Blocking 'The Path to 9/11'," produced by right-wing rabble-rouser David Bossie and directed by former radio host John Ziegler. On its surface, the new video is a fascinating piece of behind-the-scenes investigative work. But, like the original telefilm and its quashing by the Clinton camp, it is not without its own political intrigue. Indeed, "Blocking 'The Path to 9/11'" raises even more questions and adds its own set of disconnected dots to this broadcasting dilemma. (H/T to our man Steve!) More>>>

Auto industry allies hope to secure up to $50 billion in federal t loans this month to modernize plants and help struggling car makers build more fuel-efficient vehicles. Congress returns this coming week from its summer break, and the auto industry plans an aggressive lobbying campaign for the low-interest loans. The situation is growing dire after months of tumbling sales, high gasoline prices and consumers' abandoning profitable trucks and sport utility vehicles. Lawmakers authorized $25 billion in loans in last year's energy bill, and automakers now want lawmakers to expand the pool of money available to $50 billion over three years. Source>>>

With Americans driving less, revenues have plummeted for the Highway Trust Fund because the fund is made up of gas tax money. Today the Transportation Department said that this month it is expecting to bring in $2.7 billion in gas tax revenues but anticipates needing $4.4 billion to reimburse states for their highway and road projects. The department said it will start the upcoming fiscal year that begins Oct. 1 with no money in the trust funds if patterns continue as is. On Friday, the Transportation Department said that starting next week it will begin delaying payments to states unless Congress acts quickly. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters said in a statement, "Americans cannot afford to have Congress play 'kick the can' with highway funding for another year, another month, or frankly, another week." "Every family understands that constantly spending more than you earn is a recipe for insolvency," Peters said. "Yet many in Congress have refused to apply that same common-sense thinking to the federal program that currently accounts for close to half of all highway and transit investments." On March 6, 2007, New York Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof published an article entitled ''Obama: Man of the World.'' In it, Kristof addressed Barack Obama's upbringing, including his early life in Jakarta when he ''got in trouble for making faces during Koran study classes in his elementary school.'' For some reason, the link to this piece doesn't work anymore. More>>>

Expect Obama/Biden to get a little desperate and resort to more and more negative campaigning. There are three reasons for McCain’s sudden surge apart from a successful convention. (In this regard, I think the effectiveness of Giuliani’s comically savage attack on Obama have not been fully appreciated.) First, the ramifications of not choosing Hillary are now clear: Obama lost a savvy experienced campaigner, who had successfully wooed the white-working class More>>>

James Chester, 22, befriended the girl's brother, became part of the family and was even seen by her mother in school uniform. Portsmouth Crown Court heard he told the family he was 16 when he was then 21. Chester had met the family from Portsmouth in early 2007 and began a sexual relationship with the girl. More>>>

Shares of United Airlines parent UAL tanked Monday when a six-year-old Chicago Tribune story on the company's prior bankruptcy apparently resurfaced as new news, sparking a run on the stock. UAL (nasdaq: UAUA - news - people ) fell as low at $3 Monday, after closing at $12.30 per share Friday. "Brides" and "grooms" are no longer allowed to marry in the State of California. That privilege is only extended to individuals who allow themselves to be called "Party A" and "Party B" on marriage licenses. Pastor Doug Bird of Abundant Life Fellowship in Roseville, Calif., was alarmed to find the state now rejects the traditional terms after he officiated his first marriage ceremony last week following the California Supreme Court decision to overturn Proposition 22. YESTERDAY'S Gallup poll had John McCain ahead of Barack Obama by an astonishing 10 points among likely voters. A Washington Post poll had that lead at only two points, but clearly showed a McCain surge - especially among women. This wasn't what Democrats were expecting when they left Denver - yet they have nobody to blame but themselves. More>>>

“It’s not bailing out the homeowners who are in trouble, by the way,” Rogers said. “It’s not bailing out people who want a mortgage – it’s just bailing out financial institutions. This is not my idea of the way things are supposed to be, but if that’s what America wants, you know, it can elect people who are going to do it. I think it’s a mistake.” Rogers had previously called for Fannie and Freddie to be allowed to go bankrupt. “They should not be bailed out,” he told “Worldwide Exchange” July 15. “This is outrageous. Who are these people who are taking our money and doing this and ruining America?” “Let the patient go bankrupt,” he said. “We have courts in America; they will be reorganized.” More>>>

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Did you ever consider joining the armed services to protect and serve our country? If not, why? BARACK OBAMA: You know, I actually did. STEPHANOPOULOS: When? BARACK OBAMA: You know, I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school. And I was growing up in Hawaii, and I had friend whose parents were in the military, there were a lot of Army, military bases there. And I always actually thought of the military as some ennobling and honorable option. But keep in mind: I graduated in 1979. The Vietnam War had come to an end. We weren't engaged in an active military conflict at that point. So it's not an option that I ever decided to pursue. Got that? Barack might very well have gone Rambo, but the end of the Vietnam War and the absence of any hot action elsewhere tragically deprived him of the opportunity. If only Obama had taken Hillary, who wanted to join the Marines, he could have a ticket of two would-be warriors, but for the cruel intervention of circumstances. Observes the Telegraph [via Drudge] with exquisite British understatement: "The aspiration was not mentioned in either of his two volumes of memoirs." Obamamessiah was ready to kick some booty, but there just wasn't a war on, huh? -Roland More>>>

Moneymaker is part of the growing problem of "phony war heroes," across the nation, Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig "Jake" Jacobsen said. "As the wars drag on in this country, you have more and more wannabes" who make claims of sacrifices never suffered and medals never earned, Jacobsen said Unlike other imposters who seek only bragging rights or political gain, Moneymaker was motivated mostly by greed, the government contended -- making his false claims to collect more than $18,000 in disability and military benefits. Moneymaker was sentenced Friday by Judge James Turk following a March trial in U.S. District Court in Roanoke. After hearing testimony that Moneymaker made up tales of firefights, Ranger missions and hundreds of parachute jumps, a jury convicted him of six charges of fraud and theft More>>> |
