Back in late September, when my bank stocks began to tank — slowly, then all at once, as Hemingway described going broke — another wall in my life began to crack, as rumors of break-ins rattled my peaceful neighborhood in Allentown, Pa. The first indication that something was going on was the Crime Watch sign that suddenly appeared on the utility pole a block from my house. More>>>

"People have lost their sense of humour. In former times we constantly made jokes about different races. You can only tell them today with one hand over your mouth or you will be insulted as a racist," the Daily Express quoted him as saying. "I find that ridiculous. In those earlier days every friendly clique had a 'Sam the Jew' or 'Jose the Mexican' - but we didn't think anything of it or have a racist thought. It was just normal that we made jokes based on our nationality or ethnicity. That was never a problem. I don't want to be politically correct. More>>> Friday, February 27

"I'm a very strong supporter of Israel," Clinton said back in February 2000.
On Thursday, as Secretary of State she had yet another about face in the form of angry messages demanding Israel speed up aid to Gaza. Jewish leaders are furious. "I don't believe that we should be in a position at this point to do anything to strengthen Hamas," Zuckerman said. "The cost of energy for consumers would be driven higher in President Barack Obama's proposed budget by a carbon cap-and-trade system that is projected to raise about $80 billion a year starting in 2012." "Let's just be honest and call it a carbon tax that will increase taxes on all Americans who drive a car, who have a job, who turn on a light switch, pure and simple," said the Republican leader in the House, Rep. John Boehner of Ohio. (H/T: Steve!) More>>> Thursday, February 26

The Senate has barred federal regulators from reviving a policy, abandoned two decades ago, that required balanced coverage of issues on public airwaves.
The Senate vote on the so-called Fairness Doctrine was in part a response to conservative radio talk show hosts who feared that Democrats would try to revive the policy to ensure liberal opinions got equal time. The Federal Communications Commission implemented the doctrine in 1949, but stopped enforcing it in 1987 after deciding new sources of information and programming made it unnecessary. President Barack Obama says he has no intention of reimposing the doctrine, but Republicans, led by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., say they still need a guarantee the government would not establish new quotas or guidelines on programming. More>>>

First, the history you won’t hear from Clooney and his ilk. Darfur is a region in Sudan. About 30 years ago the Arab Muslims in the north decided they that wanted to implement Sharia law throughout the entire country. The problem was that there are a lot of people in Sudan who aren’t interested in Sharia law: the folks in the south are generally black Christians. So the Muslims started a war in which about 2 million people were killed or displaced. The Arabs in the north enslaved many of the blacks from the south — a barbaric practice which continues to this day. Today, the war is at a stalemate. South Sudan is working on a cession plan. The citizens of southern Sudan are much poorer than those in the north because oil revenues tend to be given much more freely to those who follow Mohammad.
But not everyone who follows Mohammed gets a slice of the pie. As the fighting in the south began to subside, the desperately poor people in the region known as Darfur - largely black Muslims — wanted to get some help too. Oil was found in Darfur, and the black Muslim citizens of Darfur asked the Arab Muslim government in Khartoum if they could share in the newly-discovered oil wealth. The Arab Muslim government answered quickly and forcefully: hell no! And because the black Muslims in Darfur had the nerve to question their Arab Muslim brothers, they were declared kuffar - ingrates and rejecters. The Arab Muslims labeled them less than human, which means that they are now allowed to be slaughtered and enslaved. More>>>

You think home mortgages are the end of the real estate problem! Think again. Because, here comes The Big One: commercial mortgages. Your average big kitchen, 3 1/2 baths, 4 bedrooms, and an entertainment room with a big screen on the wall HOME pales next to a gigantic mall, an industrial/office park, skyscraper commercial building. Commercial real estate has too many vacancies; too many empty store fronts; too much dreary space. In a commercial office building, one person needs only a computer to do the job that multiple people needed more room to do. Technology and equipment replaced the person. Fewer people. Fewer people needed. Production with more efficient machinery requires fewer people. Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times, flat on his back with his little wrench in hand going down the conveyor belt, just doesn’t exist in today’s highly specialized, technologically advanced, precision production world. The spillover of violence from Mexico began some time ago in border towns like Laredo and El Paso in Texas, where merchants and wealthy families face extortion and kidnapping threats from Mexican gangs, and where drug dealers who refuse to pay “taxes” to Mexican cartel bosses are gunned down. But now, the threat posed by Mexican criminals is beginning to spread north from the U.S.-Mexican border. One location that has felt this expanding threat most acutely is Phoenix, some 185 miles north of the border. Some sensational cases have highlighted the increased threat in Phoenix, such as a June 2008 armed assault in which a group of heavily armed cartel gunmen dressed like a Phoenix Police Department tactical team fired more than 100 rounds into a residence during the targeted killing of a Jamaican drug dealer who had double-crossed a Mexican cartel. We have also observed cartel-related violence in places like Dallas and Austin, Texas. But Phoenix has been the hardest hit. Narcotics smuggling and drug-related assassinations are not the only thing the Mexican criminals have brought to Phoenix. Other criminal gangs have been heavily involved in human smuggling, arms smuggling, money laundering and other crimes. Due to the confluence of these Mexican criminal gangs, Phoenix has now become the kidnapping-for-ransom capital of the United States More>>>

Yes, the speech was everything I thought it might be. But, I'm not sure what made me more angry and frustrated: Obama's tour de force of socialism or the Republican response. Republicans are supposed to offer an alternative to the Democrats, right? We are the party of smaller government, lower taxes, equal opportunity, and freedom. I heard none of that. How are Republicans supposed to win back seats if America can't tell the difference between the two? During his address, Obama used the word "crisis" about 12 times. With each utterance of the word, he is reminding the American people that the only solution lies with more government spending and more government control. As noted in the story Obama vows to lead US from dire 'day of reckoning', Obama said, "So I ask this Congress to join me in doing whatever proves necessary. Because we cannot consign our nation to an open-ended recession." Excuse me, but has the United States of America ever been in an "open-ended" recession? No. And we will come out of this one as well. The key question to ask is, "When we do come out of the recession, will we have less freedom than before." Unfortunately, the answer is yes. We will also have more debt, more government control, and more class warfare. And this is a solution? More>>>

As Obama prepared to deliver his address to Congress on Tuesday, the Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner, Fox News' Bret Baier and Charles Krauthammer all gushed that history was being made as the first African-American president appeared before Congress. Even Gov. Bobby Jindal, whom I suppose I should note was the first Indian-American to give the Republican response to a president's speech, began with an encomium to the first black president. (Wasn't Bobby great in "Slumdog Millionaire"?) Are we going to have to hear about this for the next four years? Obama is becoming the Cal Ripken Jr. of presidents, making history every time he suits up for a game. Recently, Obama also became the first African-American president to order a ham sandwich late at night from the White House kitchen! That's going to get old pretty quick. More>>>

Cutting Off Heads Is Standard Practice And Religious Duty In Islam The Qu’ran (Koran) contains numerous verses that encourage Muslims to behead, mutilate or slaughter those considered to be infidels. Here are a few: 5:33-“The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution (by beheading), or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter;” 8:12- “I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off.” More>>> Wednesday, February 25

If soaring Obama rhetoric were sufficient to spark economic growth then we would be safely on our way to a new era of riches and comfort. But talk is cheap and bullshit, even if described as savory chocolate mousse, remains nothing more than smelly cow excrement. But before looking at some of the specifics of the stimulus bill there is this news today in the Washington, DC metro area–several prominent shopping malls–e.g., Montgomery Mall (which is two miles from me)–are opening later and closing earlier because there is not enough business. This should scare the shit out of the Obama White House. Why? The DC area, particularly Bethesda, Potomac, and Rockville, Maryland are considered wealthy, recession proof areas because of the plethora of government workers. Government workers are not being laid off. In fact, many are getting raises. So if businesses in an area flush with Government cash are suffering, look out. The economy is in worse shape than the media is willing to recognize. More>>> Tuesday, February 24

America is going further in debt to the Chinese Communists. Our country is officially being sold to the highest bidder. And we have striking confirmation of this fact from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The good news is that a correspondent for the mainstream media―Wyatt Andrews of CBS News―has figured this out and has managed to get on the air with his terrifying findings. Andrews’ report on the Friday CBS Evening News with Katie Couric was direct and to the point. Clinton is in China to beg for a handout. “The truth is the Administration needs China’s help. America’s stimulus is very expensive and the U.S. wants China to help finance it,” Andrews reported. This is what America has become―a country that sends its Secretary of State abroad to beg for money from foreigners. In this case, it’s a communist dictatorship that forces women to have abortions, tortures Christians, and threatens the freedom and democratic government of Taiwan. So the cost of the “stimulus” is more sacrifice of American independence and sovereignty, as well as our own values, ideals, and commitment to human freedom. It is a sad day both for America and China. More>>>

An increasing number of recent letters and e-mails from readers strike a note, not only of unhappiness with the way things are going in our society, but a note of despair. Those of us who are pessimists are only a step away from despair ourselves, so we may not be the ones to offer the best antidote to the view that America has seen its best days and is degenerating toward what may well be its worst. Yet what hope remains is no less precious nor any less worthy of being preserved. More>>>

Sen. Richard Shelby has revisited an earlier controversy by suggesting that Barack Obama is foreign-born and not eligible to be president. The Alabama Republican met with constituents in Cullman County on Saturday, mainly to discuss the economic stimulus bill, which he opposed. But a local resident asked Shelby if there is any truth to allegations that arose during the presidential campaign concerning Obama’s place of birth, the Cullman Times reported. “Well, his father was Kenyan and they said he was born in Hawaii, but I haven’t seen any birth certificate,” Shelby said. “You have to be born in America to be president.” Shelby is correct in stating that Obama has not released his birth certificate. Instead, Obama’s campaign released his certification of live birth — not his actual birth certificate. The certification acknowledges birth but does not include such details as place of birth. State officials in Hawaii sought to stem the controversy during the campaign, claiming that they had checked health department records and determined that Obama was in fact born in Hawaii. Also, Factcheck.org reproduced an announcement of Obama’s birth that was published in the Honolulu Advertiser on Aug. 13, 1961, nine days after his birth. It included his parents' address in Honolulu. Arch-conservative Alan Keyes is among those who allege that Obama has failed constitutional muster to become president. Keyes, a former U.S. ambassador who ran against Obama in 2004 as the Republican Senate candidate in Illinois, said in a recent interview that Obama was born in Kenya. Obama could put the urban legend to rest by simply releasing his actual birth certificate, but he has declined to do so. Since his place of birth in Hawaii is identified on his still undisclosed birth certificate, he is one of the few U.S. presidents whose location of birth is still not known to the public. In journalistic terms it’s called a “tick-tock.” This is when the media crafts a news story that takes you behind the scenes of an event and breaks down, piece by linear piece, the individual acts which led up to that event. With “Media Malpractice: How Obama Got Elected and Palin Was Targeted,” director John Ziegler (”Blocking the Path to 9/11“) turns the art of the tick-tock around and aims it, with damning effect, squarely at the news media. The result is not a documentary, at least not for anyone who believes in truth, fairness or journalistic integrity - the result is a horror film. If you expect Ziegler to build his case using easy targets like Keith Olbermann aping David Strathairn playing Edward R. Murrow, think again. Olbermann’s a bit player in this cinematic indictment, a clown. The real conspirators run the gamut of every network (cable and otherwise), and most of the major print and online publications. Maybe it’s not a horror story, after all. Maybe it’s something closer to an Agatha Christie mystery where everyone’s the murderer. The victim, of course, is American journalism. More>>>

Climate scientist Dr Ben Herman, past director of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics and former head of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona, notes that for the media, "What happens in the Arctic may be an indicator of what will happen in the rest of the world. How about what happens in the Antarctic then? Since its ice area has been increasing, is this also an indicator of what might be happening in the rest of the world?" The FACT is that the majority of Antarctica has cooled over the past 50 years and ice coverage has grown to record levels. Take the well-publicized collapse of a 160 square mile block of the Wilkins Ice Shelf in Antarctica in March 2008. For the alarmist media this was conclusive proof of the dramatic global warming effects. The Los Angeles Times ran, 'Antarctica Collapse' referring to the "rapid melt of the Wilkins Shelf". The Sydney Morning Herald ran 'Ice Shelf Hangs By a Thread' and the Salon online news site had the absurd headline 'Bye-bye Antarctica?' But Joseph D'Aleo, first Director of Meteorology at The Weather Channel and Chief Meteorologist at Weather Services International, was more prosaic. On his IceCap website, D'Aleo wrote that the collapse was the equivalent, given the enormity of Antarctica, of "an icicle falling from a snow and ice covered roof." He added, "The latest satellite images and reports suggest the ice has already refrozen around the broken pieces. In fact the ice is returning so fast, it is running an amazing 60 percent ahead of last year when it set a new record." Noting the ludicrous media hype, D`Aleo laments, "Yet the world is left with the false impression Antarctica's ice sheet is also starting to disappear." More>>>

WSJ: Officially recognizing that carbon dioxide is a danger to the public would require the government, under the Clean Air Act, to draw up regulations governing greenhouse-gas emissions from coal-fired power plants, refineries, chemical plants, cement firms, vehicles and any other emitting sectors. Administration officials have said they would limit regulation to facilities over a certain size. But legal experts say designating carbon dioxide a public danger could open up any emitters to legal challenge. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers have been lobbying the EPA for months against trying to regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act, warning that such action would lead to costly new regulations affecting not only coal plants and large manufacturers but also schools, apartment buildings and hospitals. "Once carbon dioxide is regulated, they can no longer contain the Clean Air Act...and it would completely shut the country down," said William Kovacs, a chamber vice president. These pioneers also had to count on themselves for protection. They faced many dangers and had no one to protect them from wild animals, Indians and thieves. As a result, they were heavily armed. Firearms were tools just like the axe and the shovel. They didn't have the government to defend them, feed them or house them. Most of them survived and prospered. The ones who refused to drop the piano off at the river crossing and insisted on taking the extra baggage with them at the expense of food for the team usually failed. The team died or the wagon broke down and they were left in the middle of the prairie to face the winter with no food or shelter. There were no anti-gun advocates on the wagon trail either. Guns were their best friends. Now look at the country a mere one hundred and fifty years later. We are in the middle of the prairie. The team pulling the wagon (the tax payer) has been pulling hard for years and they are getting tired. The wagon (the government) is loaded down to the railings. It is full and can't hold any more. The axles are buckling under the strain and the spokes of the wheels are failing. There are some people riding the wagon that need to be there. They are the old, the sick and the unfortunate (social security, Medicare and temporarily unemployed). Unfortunately for the team, there are far too many who are on the wagon that shouldn't be there. They have been on the wagon for generations and never plan to get off. When the team dies, they will sit with the wagon until it rots and someone comes to save them. If a savior never shows up, they will die in place feeling sorry for themselves until their last breath. More>>>

In late January, when Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin spoke during the opening proceedings at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, he passed on an opportunity to really take it to the United States for its role in the creation of the global economic crisis, pulling punches where he could have easily landed a few knockout blows. That's not to say, of course, that he did not touch upon what has happened here, and how the previous administration simply put on a happy face. "In the last few months, virtually every speech on this subject started with criticism of the United States. But I will do nothing of the kind," Putin said. "I just want to remind you that, just a year ago, American delegates speaking from this rostrum emphasized the US economy's fundamental stability and its cloudless prospects. Today, investment banks, the pride of Wall Street, have virtually ceased to exist. In just 12 months, they have posted losses exceeding the profits they made in the last 25 years. This example alone reflects the real situation better than any criticism." More>>>

Liz Peek: Stock Market Gives Obama’s First Month An 'F': Today marks the one-month anniversary of President Obama’s inauguration. In his brief time in office, the president has overseen three massive new spending initiatives — the $787 billion stimulus bill, the trillion-dollar financial stability initiative and, most recently, the $275 billion mortgage assistance program. That’s a lot of activity, and a ton of money, but so far the reaction to the new administration’s programs has been decidedly negative. Investors, among others, have panned the plans; the stock market is off nearly 10% from the day before the inauguration, or more than 800 points on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Yesterday, in fact, we crossed a truly alarming divide. The Dow Jones average closed at its lowest point since October 2002, the bottom of the last bear market. The S&P 500 fell to 779, barely above the intra-day low of 741 of last November. For many market analysts, if the market crashes through that recent benchmark, it will next move significantly lower. Ouch. More>>> Friday, February 20

If there's one thing that really gets under my skin, it's racial politics. Despite the Democrats' claim that they are for equality, they continue to not only promote policies that favor one racial or ethnic group over another, but they also play the "race" card any chance they get. Forget about having a fair, open, and honest debate. When the stakes are high, you can bet that if the race card can be played, it certainly will. The latest example deals with the GOP governors who are considering rejecting all or part of the stimulus. Forget that they have serious misgivings about the bill and the way the funds must be spent. Clearly their opposition is based on racial prejudice, right? Give me a break! As I discussed Thursday in GOP Governors Now Faced with Hot Potato, now that the stimulus bill has passed, some GOP governors are considering rejecting all or part of the stimulus funds. Their opposition is due in part to their conservative beliefs, but also due to that fact that the Democrat-backed legislation is loaded with conditions and state matching requirements. In other words, there are plenty of strings attached. However, opposition based on principle doesn't quite cut it for South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn. As the highest-ranking black in the U.S. House, he said that opposition to the stimulus bill is "a slap in the face of African-Americans." As Fox News reports, "Clyburn said he was trying to protect black Americans when he added a provision to the stimulus package that would let state lawmakers override governors who oppose it." Ah, I see... take power away from governors because surely they are a bunch of racists. That makes perfect sense. (H/T to our gal Semra!) More>>>

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy A few minutes ago, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs responded to CNBC's Rick Santelli and his outburst which tapped into populist anger over some of the policies of the month-old Obama Administration. CBS's Chip Reid asked Gibbs, referring to "that cable rant," about the Obama mortgage plan. Gibbs: I've watched Mr. Santelli on cable the past 24 hours or so. I'm not entirely sure where Mr. Santelli lives or in what house he lives. But the American people are struggling every day to meet their mortgage, stay in their jobs, pay their bills, send their kids to school, hope they don't get sick or somebody they care for gets sick and sends them into bankruptcy. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says he wants to consider taxing motorists based on how many miles they drive rather than how much gasoline they burn — an idea that has angered drivers in some states where it has been proposed. Gasoline taxes that for nearly half a century have paid for the federal share of highway and bridge construction can no longer be counted on to raise enough money to keep the nation's transportation system moving, LaHood said in an interview with The Associated Press. "We should look at the vehicular miles program where people are actually clocked on the number of miles that they traveled," the former Illinois Republican lawmaker said. Most transportation experts see a vehicle miles traveled tax as a long-term solution, but Congress is being urged to move in that direction now by funding pilot projects. "As some of our readers have already noticed, there was a significant problem with the daily sea ice data images on February 16. The problem arose from a malfunction of the satellite sensor we use for our daily sea ice products. Upon further investigation, we discovered that starting around early January, an error known as sensor drift caused a slowly growing underestimation of Arctic sea ice extent.
