In an 83 to 53 vote, with 42 abstentions, the U.N. General Assembly urged nations to provide "adequate protections" in their laws or constitutions against "acts of hatred, discrimination, intimidation and coercion resulting from defamation of religions and incitement to religious hatred in general."
Only Islam and Muslims are specifically named in this resolution against religious defamation, sponsored by Uganda on behalf of the 57-member Organization of the Islamic Conference, and cosponsored by Belarus and Venezuela. Opponents included the United States, a majority of European countries, Japan and India.

New president brings flip flop from Human Rights Watch on rendition

RE: Rendition [Mark Hemingway]
Buried in that LAT article on rendition Jonah linked below is a flip-flop from Human Rights Watch that would impress even the East German judge. Here's Human Rights Watch in April of last year:
The US government should:
·Repudiate the use of rendition to torture as a counterterrorism tactic and permanently discontinue the CIA's rendition program;
·Disclose the identities, fate, and current whereabouts of all persons detained by the CIA or rendered to foreign custody by the CIA since 2001, including detainees who were rendered to Jordan;
·Repudiate the use of "diplomatic assurances" against torture and ill-treatment as a justification for the transfer of a suspect to a place where he or she is at risk of such abuse;
·Make public any audio recordings or videotapes that the CIA possesses of interrogations of detainees rendered by the CIA to foreign custody;
·Provide appropriate compensation to all persons arbitrarily detained by the CIA or rendered to foreign custody.
Now here's Human Rights Watch in the era of Hope and ChangeTM:
"Under limited circumstances, there is a legitimate place" for renditions, said Tom Malinowski, the Washington advocacy director for Human Rights Watch. "What I heard loud and clear from the president's order was that they want to design a system that doesn't result in people being sent to foreign dungeons to be tortured — but that designing that system is going to take some time."

The 'Rangel Rule'

Chairman Rangel admitted on the floor of the House that he had for years failed to pay tax on rental income from his resort property in the Caribbean. He apologized for this "oversight" and agreed to pay his back taxes - but has paid no interest or penalties.
Secretary Geithner admitted in his Senate confirmation hearings he had for years failed to pay taxes on his income from the International Monetary Fund, even though the IMF sent him checks and instructions to pay those taxes. He also called this an "oversight," has paid no penalties and faces no charges...
...But Rep. Rangel is the powerful Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees the IRS. And Geithner is secretary of the treasury - the boss of the IRS. Just like Bill Hobby, these two high-status fellows have received a little different treatment than the common taxpayer.
We either need to hold Chairman Rangel and Secretary Geithner fully accountable under the law - or we need a national "Hobby Rule" for taxpayers.
Last week, (Rep. John Carter (R-Texas)) introduced the Rangel Rule Act of 2009 (HR 735). Under this bill, any US citizen who owes back taxes can pay them and automatically waive all interest and penalties by writing "Rangel Rule" on their return.

GOP leaders doubt stimulus bill (as written) will pass Senate
by

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday the massive stimulus bill backed by President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats could go down to defeat if it's not stripped of unnecessary spending and focused more on housing issues and tax cut.
The Senate version of the bill, which topped out at nearly $900 billion, is headed to the floor for debate. The House bill totaled about $819 billion and earned no Republican votes, even though it easily passed the Democratic-controlled House.
(136 billion on 32 new government programs; 335 million on STD prevention; 600 million for new government cars; 50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts...and that's just scratching the surface. Less than 20% of the latest TRILLION DOLLAR "stimulus" bill that passed the House without a single GOP vote will do ONE DAMNED THING to stimulate the economy. And for this, our elected officials will burden generations of Americans yet to be born with the consequences? It's not just wrong. It's immoral. -Roland)

God: Be fruitful and mulitply. Greenie: Two children should be the limit
by

From Sunday's edition of TimesOnline: COUPLES who have more than two children are being “irresponsible” by creating an unbearable burden on the environment, the government’s green adviser has warned.
Jonathon Porritt, who chairs the government’s Sustainable Development Commission, says curbing population growth through contraception and abortion must be at the heart of policies to fight global warming. He says political leaders and green campaigners should stop dodging the issue of environmental harm caused by an expanding population.
A report by the commission, to be published next month, will say that governments must reduce population growth through better family planning.
(Porritt's view is distorted and short-sighted. For example, the UK Daily Mail reported last August that, in Britain, pensioners now outnumber children...for the first time in history! Who will be around to work and pay the taxes and care for the elderly when a country sets artificial limits on births and kills its unborn? -Roland)
