View Article  Obama confesses his concern that released Gitmo detainees will resume attacks on US

Obama critics note that even former President George W. Bush wanted to close Guantanamo. They say the difficult issue is deciding what to do with the inmates because they cannot be sent home for fear of torture, and other countries are unwilling to take them.

There also are fears some may return to their attacks against the United States. Several of the detainees released by the Bush administration again became active in anti-U.S. militant groups.

Immediately after the Democratic National Convention in Colorado, the Boston Globe published a letter from David Alinsky. He boasted about how Barack Obama had made effective use of his training in the methods of David's late father, the famous Chicago radical, Saul Alinsky. Gregg's nomination — and pending Senate vacancy — would mean New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch, a Democrat, would have the power to appoint a Senate successor. Republicans feared Gregg's departure would put the seat into Democratic hands, perhaps giving the controlling party a filibuster-proof majority.

However, after negotiations with the governor's office, Gregg said Monday in a statement, "I have made it clear to the Senate leadership on both sides of the aisle and to the governor that I would not leave the Senate if I felt my departure would cause a change in the makeup of the Senate."

Lynch confirmed the "understanding," though he stopped short of promising to appoint a Republican or an independent to serve out the remaining two years of Gregg's term.

View Article  President Obama, in office for barely two weeks, has been holding secret meetings with Syria and Iran for...two months?

In an interview broadcast Monday, Obama said the United States would offer arch-foe Iran an extended hand of diplomacy if the Islamic Republic's leaders "unclenched their fist."

Meanwhile, his secretary of state Hillary Clinton warned that the Israeli-Syrian track of the Middle East peace negotiations took a back seat to the Israeli-Palestinian track, especially because of the recent war in Gaza.

However, even before winning the November 4 election, Obama unofficially used what experts call "track two" discussions to approach America's two foes in the region.

Nuclear non-proliferation experts had several "very, very high-level" contacts in the last few months with Iranian leaders, said Jeffrey Boutwell, executive director for the US branch of the Pugwash group
