THE solar system's clockwork motion is by no means guaranteed: one day the Earth could collide with Venus or tear Mars apart in a close encounter, a new simulation has shown. We know that the apparently reliable orbits of the planets are unstable in the long run, because their weak gravitational effects on one another can add up in unpredictable ways. Technically, the system is chaotic. Could this very mild chaos lead to disaster? Mercury is the key to catastrophe. It is especially susceptible to Jupiter's influence because of a small celestial coincidence: Mercury's perihelion, the point where it gets closest to the sun, slowly moves around at a rate of about 1.5 degrees every 1000 years, and Jupiter's perihelion moves around only a little slower. One day, the two will probably fall into sync, at which time Jupiter's incessant gravitational tugs could accumulate and pull Mercury off course. More>>>

Late night talk show host David Letterman's joke about Sarah Palin's daughter getting "knocked up" by Alex Rodriguez during a Yankees baseball game has, rightly so, caused an uproar in the blogosphere. The joke was tasteless, crude, and not funny but when has Letterman not being funny ever stopped him? Politics in the US has become extremely polarized and for good reason. There are very serious left vs. right, right vs. wrong issues that confront us as a nation. However the vitriol has spilled over from the political debate platform and on to the kids of politicians. It's not fair and more than that, as Wilford Brimley's character opined in the film Absence of Malice, 'by God it ain't right'. During the Clinton administration, Bill and Hillary made it clear that the media could have all the fun it wanted poking fun at them (yeah, right), but that Chelsea, their daughter, was OFF LIMITS. Since then, the unwritten practice of leaving high profile politicians' offspring alone has been known as the "Chelsea Rule". You see, in a civilized society, it's called propriety. However, it's glaringly apparent that said propriety only applies to children of Democrat politicians. From the moment that GOP candidate for president John McCain first selected Sarah Palin as his running mate and it was discovered that teen daughter Bristol was pregnant out of wedlock, the Chelsea Rule seemingly flew right out the window. In addition to pouncing on every dirty tidbit and allegation the media could find on Governor Palin, they gleefully made sport of her children, particularly Bristol. Gore's son gets a DWI...media looks the other way. Biden's daughter and her cocaine scandal...nothing, zero, nada. Governor Palin takes her daughter Willow to a Yankees game...OMIGOD, SOMEBODY CALL DAVE!!! And so, liberal jackass David Letterman makes an incredibly off-color joke at the expense of Bristol's fourteen-year old sister. Well, nice going, Dave. Your buffoonery has only served to further alienate half your viewers. I personally gave up watching your antics years ago when you decided that your biased political views were more important than making good television. Undoubtedly, more people like me will do the same and tune in to Conan or Discovery Channel instead. It's obvious...to me anyway...why Leno kicked your ass regularly in the ratings during his tenure as Tonight Show host. Oh, and one more thing, Dave...Johnny Carson was right. - Roland |
